Discover the best free concert series, outdoor music events, and community performances happening across Iowa during the summer of 2026.
There are few better ways to spend a summer evening in Iowa than sitting outside with a lawn chair, a cold drink, and live music you can tap your foot to. Mosquitoes be darned!
Fortunately for Iowans, free outdoor concerts are practically a seasonal tradition. Communities across the state host free concert series (or even one-off concerts) that make it easy to enjoy great music without spending a dime.
If you’re looking for a laid-back weeknight outing or a family-friendly event—or just an excuse to stay outside a little longer on a warm summer evening—these free concerts deserve a spot on your summer calendar.
Lawn Chair Night | Decorah
Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest.
For more than 25 years, Lawn Chair Night has transformed downtown Decorah into an outdoor concert venue, inviting residents and visitors alike to pull up a chair and enjoy live music under the open sky.
Held on Thursday evenings (from 6 to 7 p.m.) throughout the summer, the series takes place along Washington Street near Impact Coffee and showcases a mix of local and regional performers spanning folk, bluegrass, jazz, Americana, and more.
The June 25 concert features Des Moines-based musician Joshua Sinclair, a prolific alt-country and Americana performer known for creating the sound of a full band using only a guitar, microphone, and looping pedal.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket, find a spot on the sidewalk or grass, and settle in for an evening that feels quintessentially Iowa. If rain moves in, the music simply moves inside Impact Coffee.
Music Under the Stars | Des Moines
Long before outdoor concerts became trendy, Des Moines was gathering on Capitol Hill for Music Under the Stars.
Now celebrating its 77th season, the series is among the city’s oldest outdoor music traditions. Held at 7 p.m. on Sundays throughout June and July, the performances feature band music in a family-friendly setting that has welcomed generations of attendees.
Pack a few snacks, bring a blanket, and enjoy a piece of Des Moines history.

Live at the Lake | Arnolds Park
If you’re looking for a concert venue with a view, it’s hard to top Preservation Plaza in Arnolds Park.
Situated on the shores of West Lake Okoboji, the Live at the Lake series combines live music with one of Iowa’s most iconic summer destinations. Throughout the season, visitors can enjoy free performances on the lakeside stage while boats drift across the water in the background.
Bring a lawn chair, grab dinner nearby, and enjoy the show as the sun sets over the lake. Better yet, stick around after the music ends. Saturday evenings often conclude with fireworks over West Lake Okoboji.
The lineup includes a variety of local, regional, and national performers throughout the season, including Iowa native Casey Muessigmann and crowd favorites like The Pork Tornadoes.
Concerts in Kohlmann | Waverly
In Waverly, summer Thursdays belong to Kohlmann Park.
Held along the banks of the Cedar River, Concerts in Kohlmann offers a relaxed riverside setting where audiences can enjoy performances by the Waverly Municipal Band and other local musicians on Thursday nights throughout June and July.
The series feels especially nostalgic. Guests spread out lawn chairs, children play nearby, and volunteers hand out complimentary popcorn and lemonade while the music fills the park. Yes, please.
Gallagher Bluedorn Block Party Series | Cedar Valley
For the fourth consecutive summer, the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center is taking the music directly to the community.
The Gallagher Bluedorn Block Party Series brings eight free outdoor concerts to neighborhoods throughout Waterloo and Cedar Falls. It’s a traveling concert experience that turns ordinary community gathering spaces into lively outdoor venues.
Each concert features local musicians and performers while creating opportunities for neighbors to gather and simply celebrate summer together.
Saturday in the Park | Sioux City
Some concerts become traditions. Saturday in the Park has become an institution. And for good reason.
Drawing tens of thousands of attendees each year, the annual festival at Sioux City’s Grandview Park Municipal Bandshell has been a staple of Fourth of July celebrations since 1991.
This year’s lineup features artists including Joe Bonamassa, Marcus King Band, Evan Honer, Bon Bon Vivant, and Moon Dogz. Beyond the music, attendees can enjoy an arts alley, activities for children, food vendors, and a festival atmosphere that attracts visitors from across the Midwest.
If you’re looking for a free concert experience on a larger scale, this is it.
Music in the Park | Council Bluffs
Thursday evenings in downtown Council Bluffs come with their own soundtrack. A pretty good one, at that.
Music in the Park at Bayliss Park fills June and July with free performances from local and regional acts in the heart of the city.
Part of the appeal is how easily the concerts pair with the nearby farmers market. Visitors can browse vendors, pick up dinner or dessert (perhaps something to cool you off?), and then settle onto the lawn for an evening of live music.
The setting is casual, welcoming, and exactly what a summer concert series should be.
Jasper Winery Summer Concert Series | Des Moines
Wine and live music? Sign us up. It’s a hard combination to beat.
Every Thursday from May through August, Jasper Winery hosts one of central Iowa’s most popular summer concert traditions. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, purchase a glass or bottle of wine, and enjoy performances from local musicians while food trucks serve up dinner nearby.
The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between concert and picnic, making it a favorite destination for date nights, friend groups, and anyone looking to unwind after a long workday.

Fridays at the Farm | Cumming
If your ideal Friday evening includes live music and local food, Middlebrook Farm has you covered.
Fridays at the Farm is a weekly event that feels like part concert, part community gathering. Visitors can browse vendors, sample offerings from food trucks, and enjoy performances from local musicians while surrounded by the scenic landscape of the farm. Trust us, it’s gorgeous.
Summer Concert Series | Bettendorf
Every Thursday evening from June through mid-August, Faye’s Field becomes an outdoor concert venue thanks to the Bettendorf Public Library’s Summer Concert Series.
The free performances, which run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., feature a rotating lineup of bands, food trucks, lawn chairs, and picnic blankets. You’ll see it all. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, too, making this one of the more flexible and family-friendly concert options in eastern Iowa.
Symphonic Blast | Burlington
For one night each summer, Burlington combines live orchestral music with one of the most scenic views in Iowa.
Held atop the bluffs of Crapo Park overlooking the Mississippi River, Symphonic Blast pairs patriotic favorites and orchestral classics with a fireworks display that feels loud and proud.
This year’s event on July 11 celebrates America’s 250th anniversary for an added dose of summer nostalgia.
Rock the Block | Cedar Rapids
Friday nights at NewBo City Market belong to Rock the Block.
The weekly concert series transforms the Market Yard into one of eastern Iowa’s liveliest outdoor music venues, featuring a mix of local favorites and touring acts throughout the summer.
Visitors can grab food and drinks from market vendors before settling in for the show. The lineup stretches from May through August and offers something different nearly every week. Now that’s a full summer of good times.
