Fresh air, Tex-Mex, and room for the kids and dog: These are Houston’s best outdoor patios for eating, drinking, and soaking up the good life.
Houston’s bar and restaurant patio scene is impressive. In just about every one of the 88 neighborhoods in Houston, you’ll find at least one eatery, brewery, or café with outdoor dining.
That’s a good thing, because despite Houston’s heat and humidity, the locals still love eating their Tex-Mex al fresco. Fresh air and sunshine, combined with the freedom to talk a little louder, let your kids play around, and even bring your furry friend, all send Houstonians scrambling to find an outdoor patio.
Well, look no further. We’ve compiled a list of 13 Houston bars and restaurants with patios worth a perch. Outdoor seating never looked or felt so good, whether you’re on a deck shaded by trees or in a beer garden playing cornhole.
1. Rainbow Lodge

Entering Rainbow Lodge along the banks of the White Oak Bayou feels like walking into a high-end hunting lodge in Montana. From the masculine vibe to the deer heads on the walls, it screams, “We serve meat, and we make no apologies!”
Nor should they. This restaurant serves some of the best meals in Houston. The experience is only made better by a multi-tiered deck that ambles down a rocky hillside and puts you right in the center of nature. A tree canopy provides much-needed shade, and while you’re quite a distance from the kitchen, you’d never know it by the excellent service.
2. Nico Nico’s
It’s not just the Houston Chronicle that voted this restaurant Best Greek Food in Houston. Nico Nico’s wins awards every year for its authentic Greek fare, friendly service, and pet-friendly patio.
Nico Nico’s has four locations in Houston, but the Montrose restaurant features a patio where you can enjoy your lavraki, then walk it off in the pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with tree-lined streets and vintage shops. Bonus: Nico Nico’s is famously dog-friendly, so bring Fido for a bowl of water and a biscuit.
3. Tiny Boxwoods
Ladies who lunch can’t get enough of Tiny Boxwoods. Lunch here is like being invited to a lovely garden party, complete with a turkey avocado club and lemonade.
Sit under the multi-table pergola or on cozy couches for two or three and gaze at sculpted boxwoods and a meticulously maintained garden. The real jewel here comes after you eat and drink. Take a stroll to the onsite Thompson & Hanson Stone House, where you’ll find a garden center and nursery so you can recreate the feeling at home.
4. B.B. Italia

The Town Center of Sugar Land is adorable in its own right, and the addition of B.B. Italia only adds to its charm.
Homemade pasta with a glass of wine somehow tastes better on the charming patio that fronts City Walk. Dine on a Friday night, and you’re close enough to Sugar Land Town Square to enjoy the frequent live entertainment that takes place on the green. Free parking in the garage makes this choice a winner.
5. Truck Yard
The east downtown area of Houston, known as EaDo, is making headlines as the host of the FIFA World Cup Fan Festival. But EaDo’s real claim to fame has always been Truck Yard.
The outdoor space here is huge, stretching well beyond the patio. It’s super casual with tables plopped on dirt, a wooden staircase that takes you to more seating on a deck elevated over an outdoor bar, and even a Ferris wheel. It’s a different kind of “patio,” and the locals wouldn’t have it any other way.
6. Candente

If your tastes run a little more refined than a smashburger, seek out the Michelin-recognized Tex-Mex standout, Candente.
Settle in at either of the two locations in Montrose and Bellaire—both offer patio dining. Munch on brisket nachos complemented by a paloma, or enjoy a brunch of barbacoa tacos and mimosas on the covered patio. The surrounding greenery provides privacy and a cozy place to dine.
7. Axelrad
If you find yourself in Midtown, you must check out Axelrad, a beer garden beloved by Houstonians for its expansive outdoor seating that welcomes visitors with hammocks (a customer favorite) and communal picnic tables that encourage strangers to become friends.
Bring the kids during the day for family time and board games or come at night for live music. Either way, you’ll have a selection of beers on tap, served out of a blue trailer. It’s a vibe.
8. Z on 23
The only thing better than a great restaurant and bar patio is one that is 23 floors high. Z on 23 at Le Meridien is Houston’s highest rooftop bar and the perfect place to watch the sunset over the city skyline.
Grab light bites and craft cocktails, cozy up with your favorite person on a loveseat, and listen to live music against a stunning backdrop. Z on 23 is big enough to carve out your own space and small enough that it still feels intimate.
9. Saint Arnold
One of the most popular breweries in Houston, Saint Arnold carries its laid-back philosophy into its beer garden, a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Clutch a Lawnmower (the beer, silly!), cop a squat at a picnic table, and chow down on some crawfish during the season. There’s plenty of room for strollers, dogs, and lounging while you enjoy a cold one.
10. The Annie Café & Bar

If you’re after an Aperol Spritz, truffle fries, and Post Oak views, look no further than The Annie Café & Bar.
Head upstairs for a second-floor vantage point of one of Houston’s most luxe neighborhoods. The Annie is upscale but unstuffy, perfect for couples, girls’ night out, or just anyone who loves a delicious espresso martini.
11. Zanti Cucina Italiana
Get the best of all worlds—great Italian fare, mouthwatering cocktails, and a lovely patio—at Zanti Cucina Italiana.
Cozy seating, lush greenery, and a festive but refined atmosphere make Zanti’s patio dining a win-win. Check it out for weekend brunch, weekday happy hour, or a date night meal that might include a lobster pizza or a 40-oz tomahawk.
12. Buttermilk Baby
In the Heights, you’ll find a super cute patio outside Buttermilk Baby. You can’t miss it—just look for lush pink swings swaying in the breeze over bright green astroturf.
Tables with blue umbrellas are scattered throughout the fun space, and the diverse menu of everything from their famous buttermilk biscuits to incredible ice cream treats is a huge draw for families.
13. Trattoria Sofia
As you sip on a $5 martini during Trattoria Sofia’s 5 at 5 (5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), you’ll thank your lucky stars you live in Texas. Take that cocktail outside, and you’ll find total bliss.
The Trattoria Sofia patio is topped with a pergola and is climate-controlled, so you can enjoy this restaurant terrace year-round. Savor lamb meatballs in an Italian garden setting, and you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to Tuscany. È fantastico!
Houston may be hot this time of year, but with icy cold drinks, lighter summer menus, and the chance to catch a breeze from all types of outdoor restaurant and bar patios, summer just got a whole lot better.
