6 Michigan food halls with global eats for the whole family

Feeling hungry? Dig into unique flavors at these global food halls in Michigan.

It’s one of life’s reliable annoyances: the monumental task of deciding what’s for dinner every single night. When dining out is in the cards, many of us struggle to narrow down our options or match our cravings with those of our dining companions, leaving everyone irritated—and downright hangry.

Thankfully, there’s a delicious solution to the ever-aggravating task of agreeing on the perfect eatery. Here in the Great Lakes State, you’ll find a variety of food halls and markets with multiple dining options in one place and enough multicultural fare to keep the whole family happy. Here are six of our favorite Michigan food halls.

You’ll find 17 different eateries inside Grand Rapids’ beloved Downtown Market. (Grand Rapids Downtown Market)

1. The Grand Rapids Downtown Market

Location: 435 Ionia Ave SW, Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Downtown Market is known for its beautiful event spaces, charming year-round artisan booths, and, perhaps above all, its awesome assortment of food vendors. Situated in (you guessed it) downtown Grand Rapids, the marketplace offers 19 separate food merchants, with cuisine ranging from sushi to Thai to authentic Mexican.

Grab your food to-go, then enjoy it with friends in a common seating area. The Downtown Market is open until 7 or 8 p.m. every day of the week, so there’s plenty of time to make dinner plans after work or school—or in the midst of your visit to ArtPrize

2. Whatcha Wanna Eat?

Location: 10635 W McNichols, Detroit

When hunger strikes in the Motor City, there’s no shortage of great restaurants. But if you’re looking for variety, venture to the city’s northwest side to check out Whatcha Wanna Eat?, a food hall boasting seven unique eateries.

Satisfy your savory cravings at Poon’s Hibachi Grill, grab a bite at Borderline Tacos, or dig in at Heavenly Chicken and Waffles. The environment is down-to-earth and welcoming, making it an ideal place to visit with guests or the family.

3. The Canteen at Midtown

Location: 720 Town Center Dr, Dearborn

The Canteen at Midtown offers indoor and outdoor dining in the heart of Dearborn. Visitors can select from a dozen distinctive vendors and check out rotating food trucks throughout the year—all in a laid-back atmosphere with loads of seating.

Favorites at the Canteen include Italian restaurant The Bistro Box, La Fork Creperie, and Abu K’nafa, which specializes in a traditional Middle Eastern dessert known as kunafa. Is your mouth watering?

4. 10 Spot

Location: 5750 US 10, Ludington

Ludington is known for its gorgeous location along the shores of Lake Michigan, but it’s also home to a Michigan dining must-visit: 10 Spot, a collective of food trucks thoughtfully arranged in a parking lot with a covered seating area.

Dig into tamales from Chavela’s Tacos, try Mexican street corn and loaded baked potatoes from Roast’d, or keep it classic at the Lakeside Wiener Wagon. After a long day at the beach, The 10 Spot will help you recharge.

5. Detroit Shipping Company

Location: 474 Peterboro St, Detroit

We’re back in Detroit for our next food hall, which stands out for its unique venue. As its name suggests, Detroit Shipping Company is made from converted shipping containers, lending an industrial vibe to the hall.

There are five restaurants to choose from (and lots of craft beer!), including Thai favorite Bangkok 96, Sushi Lounge Detroit, and Momo Cha, which specializes in Nepalese dumplings. You’ll always find something new to try here, so add it to your Michigan dining bucket list ASAP.

Shuffleboard and live entertainment make Lansing Shuffle more than just a fantastic place to eat. (Lansing Shuffle)

6. Lansing Shuffle

Location: 325 Riverfront Dr, Lansing

Part food hall, part social club, and part shuffleboard court, Lansing Shuffle is just plain fun. There are six restaurants located in the bustling building: a Himalayan spot called Yeti Kitchen, a Mediterranean gem known as Beirut Kitchen, and Browndog, where you’ll find just about any American comfort food imaginable.

We recommend reserving a shuffleboard court ahead of time if you’re planning to play after lunch or dinner. Court rentals range from $20 to $40 per hour, with recommended groups of 4-8 per lane. And who knows? Perhaps you’ll discover an unknown talent for shuffleboard—fueled by some of Michigan’s tastiest cuisine.
