Meet the young winners of Coconino County’s sticker design contest
In an effort to encourage civic engagement and celebrate local diversity, Coconino County, Arizona, has unveiled the winners of a county-wide contest to design new “I Voted” and “Future Voter” stickers. The contest was supported by the EAC Help America Vote College Program grant and was held in partnership with Northern Arizona University (NAU).
According to Eslir Musta, Coconino County Elections Director, the contest managed to solidify the partnership with NAU and increase student participation in the voting process. Musta added that by incorporating English, Navajo, Hopi, and Spanish languages into the designs, the contest also celebrated the diverse linguistic community of Coconino County.
During the regular board meeting on Tuesday, May 14, the Coconino County Elections Department honored the two winners.
Karen Javalera, an NAU graphic design student, won for her “I Voted” sticker design. The design captures the county’s essence by featuring the iconic San Francisco Peaks and Ponderosa pines. The phrase “I Voted,” along with a checkmark, is boldly displayed across the sticker, symbolizing the fulfillment of civic duty.
The “Future Voter” sticker, aimed at youth under 18, was designed by Mary Corcoran, a Flagstaff native. The design consists of festive decorations around the edges, with the words “Future Voter” displayed prominently, invoking a sense of anticipation for future electoral participation.
Jeronimo Vasquez, Chair of the Board of Supervisors, expressed his admiration for both designs, particularly the inclusion of different languages on the ‘I Voted’ sticker. The stickers are set to be distributed at Coconino County’s Primary Election on July 30, 2024, and the General Election on November 5, 2024.
