How to help NC students quit vaping: Join the upcoming tele-town hall
The NC Health Department will host a live talk on youth vaping on September 12. Here are the details.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will hold a live fireside chat and tele-town hall on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss strategies for educators and community leaders to address youth vaping. The event aims to support North Carolina students by exploring effective methods to combat the issue. Participants in the discussion include health experts and advocates.
Event details: Speakers, topics, and live-streaming
Event participants will include:
- Nnenne Asi, MPH, Youth and Young Adult Tobacco Cessation Coordinator, Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch, NCDHHS
- Teresa Beardsley, Tobacco Prevention Manager, Albemarle Regional Health Services
- Chanda Battle, EdD, Director of Student Support Services, Edgecombe County Public Schools
- Charlene Zorn, Parent Advocate
The discussion comes in response to the growing use of e-cigarettes among students, with more than two million students nationwide using vapes, and one in four vaping every day.
In North Carolina, over 12% of high school students use tobacco products, with more than 9% using vapes. Many middle and high school students who vape express a desire to quit and have made attempts to do so. The panelists will address the impacts of vaping on youth, signs that children and teens may be vaping, and resources available to help them quit.
Discussion topics will include the effects of vaping on youth, identifying signs of vaping, and where to find free vaping prevention resources and programs. Additionally, the speakers will explore ways schools can help prevent youth from vaping or assist them in quitting, including alternatives to suspension. Tobacco use often begins in youth and can affect various aspects of their lives, including social, athletic, and academic experiences.
The fireside chat will be streamed live on the NCDHHS Facebook and YouTube accounts, where viewers can submit questions. The tele-town hall component will allow participants to listen in and ask questions by phone, accessible by dialing 855-756-7520 Ext. #106460.
