Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse
Location: 17768 Honeyville Rd., Timberville, VA 22853
Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse is a small family-operated orchard that sits on top of a hill overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, offering great views for apple picking. The apple harvest season at Showalter’s runs from mid-July through November, and the orchard includes over 30 apple varieties. Lodi apples are available at the beginning of the season, with Pink Lady being available in early November.
While there, be sure to check out Old Hill Cidery, which offers more than 10 cider varieties, plus food. The ciders are small-batch and exclusive to the orchard.
Saunders Brothers Farm Market
Location: 2717 Tye Brook Hwy., Piney River, VA 22964
Saunders Brothers Farm Market dates to 1915. Today, the Saunders family operates the farm to share their passion for connecting people through agriculture.
The apple picking season runs from late June through December, with the latest apples available being Goldrush, which are ideal for eating fresh, cooking, and cider.
Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards
Location: 5529 Crabtree Falls Hwy., Tyro, VA 22976
Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards was established in 1950 to pack apples. Today, it offers a considerable variety of apples for picking, including Gala, Blue Ridge Crisp, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, September Wonder, Honey Crisp, Red Delicious, Ginger Gold, Jonathan, Fuji, Winesap, Granny Smith, Wild Twist, and Pink Lady. Containers are provided, with half-bushels and bushels being sold.
Be sure to check out the Apple Butter Makin’ Festival on the first and third Saturday in October. Attendees can enjoy apples, cider, and apple butter.

Carter Mountain Orchard
Location: 1435 Carters Mountain Trail, Charlottesville, VA 22902
Carter Mountain Orchard is a family-owned and operated mountaintop orchard that offers a pick-your-own apple experience with stunning views of Charlottesville. The picking season runs from August through November.
Apple varieties include Albemarle Pippin, Jonagold, Pink Lady, Ginger Gold, Gala, Red Delicious, Rome, Stayman, Winesap, York, Granny Smith, and Fuji. The orchard has a pre-pay policy, so visitors must purchase at least one container for every two to three people who are picking. While there, be sure to pick up one of the orchard’s well-known apple cider donuts or some apple cider and apple butter.

Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market
Location: 3035 Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, VA 22602
Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market has been operated by three generations of the Marker-Miller family since the early 1900s. The orchard consists of 325 acres of apple trees.
The apple picking season kicks off in August with Ginger Gold and Gala, then continues in September and October with 12 more varieties. Containers need to be purchased before picking. After picking apples, relax in a rocking chair on the front porch of the market while taking in the surrounding mountains and delighting in an apple cider donut.
Morris Orchard
Location: 226 Tobacco Row Ln., Monroe, VA 24574
Morris Orchard is a family-owned and operated farm at the base of High Peak Mountain. It aims to offer customers fresh and high-quality produce.
The apple picking season runs from late June, starting with Lodi, all the way until November for Pink Lady. After picking apples, pick up a gallon of apple cider, which the orchard has been producing since the 1990s.

Great Country Farms
Location: 34345 Snickersville Turnpike, Bluemont, VA 20135
Great Country Farms focuses on regenerative agricultural practices with an emphasis on the idea that flavor is essential. Apple varieties include Honey Crisp, Gala, Jonagold, Jonafree, Candy Crisp, Ruby Jon, and Fuji.
Tickets for apple picking in the 15-acre orchard in September are sold separately from admissions tickets. Be sure to pick up one of the apple cider donuts during your visit. Also, don’t miss the Zurschmeide family’s antique 1865 cider press.
Williams Orchard
Location: 5175 West Lee Hwy., Wytheville, VA 24382
Williams Orchard has been family-owned and operated for more than 70 years. In 2019, the Drummonds family purchased the orchard from the Williams family.
The orchard team prides itself on offering visitors the opportunity to slow down and enjoy nature. The pick-your-own apples season begins the Sunday after Labor Day weekend.
Mackintosh Fruit Farm
Location: 1608 Russell Rd., Berryville, VA 22611
Mackintosh Fruit Farm’s pick-your-own season runs from May through October, from Thursday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The farm is in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, which offers a picturesque backdrop for apple picking.

Graves Mountain Farm

Graves Mountain Farm offers a pick-your-own apples experience with a range of varieties, including Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Empire, Stayman, Rome, Mutsu, York, Winesap, Granny Smith, and Fuji.

Gross Orchard

Gross Orchard has been family-owned and operated for more than a century by the Gross family. Given that the orchard is located along Route 640 in Bedford, it’s the perfect stop on a trip to Peaks of Otter.
Some of the varieties grown include Red and Golden Delicious, York, Stayman, Winesap, Rome, Blacktwig, King Lush, Gala, Fuji, Winter Banana, and Northern Spy. The apple season runs from August through October, with Pink Lady being one of the last varieties to ripen. Those wishing to pick their own apples should check in with the sales clerk to select a bag and pre-pay.
Doe Creek Farm
Location: 412 Creek Farm Rd., Pembroke, VA 24136
Doe Creek Farm is a historic 1800s working farm that has been growing apples in limestone soil at an elevation of 2,200 feet for over a century. Although it was a large commercial orchard back in the day, it’s now a pick-your-own apple orchard. Notably, the dwarf trees make picking easier.
The season runs from the end of August through the beginning of September. The varieties offered include Honeygold, Jonafree, Ambrosia, Candy Crisp, Snow Sweet, Arkansas Black, Braeburn, and Winesap.
