From a fully free restaurant to cafes that let you pay-it-forward, here are 10 dining establishments in Michigan that let you give and receive free meals.
One of the best parts about Michigan is its residents’ focus on tight-knit, local communities. So it should come as no surprise that several cafes and restaurants in Michigan offer pay-what-you-can and pay-it-forward pricing options.
If you or someone you know needs assistance with food, there are, of course, many Michigan food pantries that can provide help, but sometimes, it’s nice to go out and enjoy a restaurant. From a full dining experience with a server and menu to quick bites and coffee shops, here are 10 pay-it-forward Michigan restaurants that let you give or receive.

1. Ivy Table Cafe
Location: 10180 E Grand River Ave, Brighton
Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The only truly pay-it-forward restaurant on our list, The Ivy Table Cafe, is a 501(c) non-profit, primarily volunteer-staffed restaurant in Brighton, Mich., with a full “pay-what-you-can” pricing and a pay-it-forward system for meals. Those with means can also donate to the restaurant to cover the cost of another person’s meal. Upon ordering, all guests at the cafe are asked if they would like to be blessed with a free meal—if they shake their head “yes,” they are served one. To decline the free meal and make an offering, guests can reply no or shake their heads.
Guests who need a ride to eat can call (517)-546-6600 to have the cafe cover the cost of a LETS ride. Outside of business hours, free meals are stocked in the Free Meal Fridge in the garden shed in front of the restaurant. The restaurant serves up breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Friday using fresh, local ingredients.
Operating under a “biblical model for hospitality,” the non-profit also operates in Thailand through a mission called “The Table,” which focuses on feeding the elderly, the handicapped, the poor, the orphaned, and refugees.
“We are celebrating the 1-year anniversary of our cafe this April. The Ivy Table was founded on the belief that everyone deserves a great meal, regardless of their ability to pay,” co-founder and executive director Jessica Smokovitz tells us.
She explained, “We don’t just address food insecurity; we have created a space where community is strengthened, dignity is restored, and every person feels valued. We’re not just serving meals—we’re creating connection, offering hope, and giving our community the opportunity to care for one another in a tangible way.” Smokovitz added that 40 percent of last month’s meals were free or discounted.
You can sign up to volunteer at the Ivy Table for tasks such as washing dishes, bussing tables, greeting guests, and cleaning.
2. East Egg Campus
Location: 2628 W Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo
Hours: Monday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
The East Egg Campus is a small diner in Kalamazoo, Mich., that features a “Giving Wall” where customers can purchase a meal ticket that’s added to the wall. Anyone in need of a free meal—or who knows someone who is—can then “cash in” the ticket to cover the cost of their meal, no questions asked.
The restaurant was founded by a Western Michigan University alumnus and continues to operate deeply within the community, while also serving up delicious, budget-friendly specialties. It serves breakfast and lunch, and we recommend following the Facebook page to take advantage of deals like Free Bacon Friday or $5 pancake meals.
3. Carlos Mexican Restaurant
Location: 7988 N Wayne Rd, Westland
Hours: Monday-Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.
Another restaurant offering a “pay it forward” wall, Carlos Mexican Restaurant in Westland, Mich., is a family-owned establishment serving up Mexican-style dishes. Like the East Egg Campus, customers of the restaurant can choose a meal ticket to add to the board, prepay for the meal, and someone in need can pick it up later at a time of their choosing.
Carlos Mexican Restaurant showed off the start of the giving board in 2025, noting that its staff had gotten the giving ball rolling by adding a “Classic Taco” dinner meal ticket. The restaurant dishes up its meals family-style and authentic, and does not serve alcohol. Outside of the pay-it-forward meals, Carlos also offers budget-friendly options for anyone watching their finances and recently introduced $1 tacos during March (cash only).
4. Italian Village Pizza
Location: 5532 W Saginaw Hwy, Lansing
Hours: Daily, opening at 11 a.m. (noon on Sunday)
What’s better than delicious New York-style pizza with melty cheese and fresh toppings? Well, free New York-style pizza with melty cheese and fresh toppings, of course.
Italian Village Pizza operates in 18 locations across the country, but the Lansing location (in the Lansing mall) is owned and operated by Ryan Marquardt, who introduced the restaurant’s pay-it-forward wall in 2024. The way it works is simple: Along with their own orders, customers have the completely voluntary option to purchase a prepaid meal sticker for another customer in need. You can also buy a pay-it-forward meal online with your order—the meal is $5.99 and includes one slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza and a 20 oz. fountain drink.
The stickers are bright yellow with smiley faces, and we love that they evoke the spirit of joyful giving. Italian Village Pizza also makes sure to place the stickers at various locations around the restaurant as a reminder that help is just an arm’s reach away.
5. Fika
Location: 1359 Plainfield Ave NE, Suite 2, Grand Rapids
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Located in Grand Rapids’ Creston community, Fika is a 100% vegan and gluten-free coffee shop, restaurant, and market that started as a grassroots effort and has grown into a beloved community staple. Founders Becca and Nick Van Liere also own Rise Authentic Baking Co., a Grand Rapids bakery on the other side of town.
Fika features delicious offerings such as nutrition-packed smoothies, salads, tofu bowls, breakfast tacos, sandwiches, and of course, coffee. Customers can purchase a pay-it-forward meal voucher that is placed on the community board and can be used by anyone. Fika recently celebrated reaching 30 pay-it-forward meals for the community.
6. Westside Diner
Location: 6301 M-72, Grayling
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-7 pm.; Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
Like many of the other restaurants on our list, Westside Diner in Grayling, Mich., has a giving wall that allows dine-in customers to prepay for meal tickets that other community members in need can use, no questions asked.
The diner serves breakfast all day and offers a full menu, including burritos, wings, and seasonal specials. I made the mistake of perusing the online menu before I had eaten breakfast myself, and immediately wanted to order everything on it, especially the overstuffed breakfast burrito and the smothered biscuits and gravy. Yum!
7. Bridge Community Cafe
Location: 217 W Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti
Hours: Closed Wednesdays; Monday-Tuesday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; Thursday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Bridge Community Cafe in Ypsilanti, Mich., is not a full-service restaurant, but it does offer a selection of vegan food and, of course, brews up hot coffee and tea, along with sweet treats like muffins and pastries for customers.
The cafe is very community-based, hosting events and gatherings, and features a pay-it-forward drink program. Customers can purchase a drink to pass along for only $3.33. The drinks are represented by beverage sleeves placed in a box on the counter by the register and are free for anyone to take and use in a time of need. With a mission rooted in “comfort, coffee, and community,” the cafe also plans to launch a pay-what-you-can soup selection and discounted lunch program for those facing food insecurity.
8. Thumb Roast Coffee-Sandusky
Location: 18 S. Elk St., Sandusky
Hours: Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Stop in Sandusky, Mich., for a cup of caffeinated (or non-caffeinated) goodness and enjoy a small-town feel of Thumb Roast Coffee. While you’re there sampling menu items like fresh lemonade, matcha, or their specialty “enjoy the moment” coffee blend, you can also ask the barista to whip you up a “pay it forward” drink. Pay for a drink of your choice in advance, and a grateful patron in need can enjoy it later.
Around the holidays, especially, Thumb Roast’s pay-it-forward board tends to get a little overflowing (get it?) with customers passing on gifts like pourovers and cappuccinos.
9. Biggby Coffee
Location: 748 Munson Ave, Traverse City
Hours: Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
While Biggby Coffee is, of course, a regional chain, some select location franchises have individual pay-it-forward programs. For instance, if you visit Biggby Coffee in Traverse City, you can order in person or online and add a “pay-it-forward” drink or food item that can be used by community members in need.
And what’s extra cool about the program is that the ticket can be utilized by any person who stops into the Traverse City coffee shop, or any other Munson Biggby Coffee location. If you want to stretch your dollar even further, be sure to stop in on Wednesdays, when the Munson location offers a BOG1, with a $1 second drink after the purchase of a regular-priced drink menu item.
10. Love Café
Location: 557 W Western Ave, Muskegon
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Operating as a pay-what-you-can model, the Love Café is a faith-based restaurant that encourages guests to enjoy a full dining experience without fear of shame or judgment. A server greets all customers, they choose their food and beverages off the menu—which does not list prices—and then when the itemized bill comes, the customers have the option to pay what they wish for each item.
The bill will give the diners three options: to pay a normal restaurant price, pay a little more than the restaurant price and have the extra go towards the Neighbors in Need program in Muskegon County, or pay nothing at all. Sound intriguing? You can make a reservation online to experience the dining program and give back or receive a meal.
