From free outdoor concerts to budget-friendly picnics, here’s how to make the most of Memorial Day weekend in Houston without breaking the bank.

Houston has always been a patriotic city, and you can bet your sweet Texan heart that this city will spend time this Memorial Day, May 25, honoring those who died to protect our country. Texas has always been a fiercely independent state, so this holiday commands the attention of its residents.

Memorial Day always falls on a Monday, and since that means a four-day weekend for a lot of the working world, the long weekend is typically filled with pool parties, picnics, and the unofficial ushering in of summer.

If you’re looking for things to do during Memorial Day in Houston, you’ve come to the right place. And we’re taking it one step further with a curated list of cheap or, in many cases, absolutely free activities suitable for families, couples, and friends.

Memorial Day Celebration at The Woodlands

When: Sun., May 24

Where: Town Green Park

Cost: Free entrance, free parking

Visitors already pause at the two patriotic statues in Town Green Park that honor fallen soldiers, so it’s a fitting place to host the annual Memorial Day Celebration at The Woodlands.

Held on Sunday, this celebration does a fantastic job of remembering the people behind this holiday while celebrating the freedom they helped protect. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a welcome and singing of the National Anthem, then the festival comes alive with children’s activities, popular music by The Matt Powers Band, and strolling entertainment.

Throughout the event, you can drop off a care package for service members deployed overseas and participate in the Houston Honor Your Hero Ceremony that includes an official swearing-in of those entering the military. It all ends with fireworks choreographed to a patriotic soundtrack.
