Discover Juneteenth events across Texas, from parades and concerts to educational programs celebrating Black history and culture.
When the Emancipation Proclamation was passed in 1863, ending slavery in the U.S., it took two years for the message to reach the Confederate states and finally, officially, free the enslaved. That momentous date was June 19, 1865, now honored and celebrated on the national holiday of Juneteenth.
With the recent Supreme Court decision to redistrict a majority Black congressional district in Louisiana, and additional redistricting across the country likely to follow, Juneteenth represents an opportunity for voters to show up in even greater numbers this year to support a holiday that represents equal rights.
Across Texas, organizations, cities, and towns are holding celebrations, some lasting throughout the month. No matter where you live in the Lone Star State, you’ll find Juneteenth festivities, opportunities to learn more about the history and culture that built this country, and activities that remind you that individual freedom must be protected.
Here’s a look at where you can find Juneteenth celebrations across Texas.
