But those in the know are aware that Nebraska is home to many speakeasies and hidden gems serving up inventive, expertly crafted cocktails in spaces that feel like they were plucked straight from the Prohibition era.

1. Alice
At Alice, a whimsical speakeasy located beneath Omaha’s Legacy Chophouse, curiosity and cocktails make the perfect pair. Inspired by the dreamlike world of “Alice in Wonderland,” the space features playful, eclectic decor and moody lighting.
The drinks are imaginative and visually exciting, often incorporating showstopping elements like fire and smoke. Many of them stick to the “Alice in Wonderland” theme, too, such as the King in Yellow, Velvet Rabbit, and Royal Flush.
How to get inside: Once you’re inside Legacy Chophouse, head down the stairs to find the entrance to Alice.

2. Anna’s Place
Anna’s Place, hidden within Hotel Indigo, is a small speakeasy-style bar named after Anna Wilson, also known as Omaha’s “Queen of the Underworld.”
The quiet, dimly lit craft cocktail bar is ideal for small groups, date nights, and intimate conversation. It also hosts events like cocktail classes and food and beverage pairings.
While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the confession line. Look for an antique phone hanging on the wall and pick it up to listen to confessions, apologies, love stories, and other messages people have shared. How to get inside: There is no password required for entry; instead, look for the light near the entrance (just past the snack area in the hotel’s lobby). If the light is green, ring the bell, and you’ll be welcomed inside. If it’s red, the bar is at capacity, and you’ll have to wait.

3. Kaitei
Kaitei is a cozy Japanese-style pub hidden beneath the popular ramen restaurant Ika Ramen & Izakaya. The intimate basement bar blends traditional izakaya influences with playful, modern touches. Inside, you’ll find colorful murals covering the walls, shelves lined with lucky cats, and anime playing on a vintage television.
The menu features an impressive selection of sake alongside inventive cocktails with fun names (Magic & Muscles and Death Note, for example) that draw inspiration from Japanese flavors and ingredients.
How to get inside: Head to the alley near Ika Ramen and look for a blue light. Or, you can use the secret entrance inside Ika’s dining room and head downstairs to the basement.

4. Sideshow Speakeasy
Tucked beneath Bierhaus Maisschäler in downtown Lincoln, Sideshow Speakeasy combines classic speakeasy charm with a polished, modern atmosphere.
The hidden basement bar features exposed brick walls, warm lighting, and a long bar that serves as the centerpiece of the space. Sophisticated barrel-style chairs, intimate booths, and cozy lounge areas provide plenty of other spots to settle in with one of the bar’s many Prohibition-inspired cocktails.

5. The Censored Shop
Tucked behind what appears to be a vintage barbershop, Barbershop Blackstone (currently operating as The Censored Shop) is one of Omaha’s most distinctive speakeasies. The hidden cocktail lounge fully embraces its barbershop theme, with nostalgic, themed decor like a red barber chair in the foyer and creative drinks like the Scotch and Scissors and Barber’s Flight.
While a recent legal dispute required the venue to temporarily change its name and hide its signature barber pole, the quirky barbershop atmosphere that made it a local favorite is still very much part of the experience.

6. The Vault
Regency Landing is home to multiple businesses, including restaurants, a co-working space, a fitness center, and a hidden Prohibition-inspired bar. The Vault is designed to look like a bank vault and features authentic vault doors that were salvaged from the historic Omaha National Bank building.
The drink menu reflects the finance world too, with libation names such as The High Roller, 402K, and The Trust Fund.
How to get inside: When Twisted Cork Bistro is open, head inside and tell the host you want to make a withdrawal. They’ll give you a key to unlock the door to The Vault. After hours, you’ll have to use the secret outside entrance. Find the door and call 531-283-5471 to be let inside.

Wicked Rabbit is hidden behind an unassuming liquor shop storefront in downtown Omaha, and entering the space feels like stepping down the rabbit hole into a world inspired by “Alice in Wonderland” (no, it’s not a coincidence: Wicked Rabbit and Alice are both owned by Maven Social!).
