It’s hard not to feel wistful as another New Mexico summer comes to an end. But between back-to-school plans and sharing vacation stories with friends, there’s still one more bit of summer fun in the Land of Enchantment to look forward to: the 2026 New Mexico State Fair! Held in Albuquerque and with a history dating back to the nineteenth century, this year’s state fair will run from September 10 through 20 and feature rides, games, music, animals, and so much more.
Planning a trip to the fair this year? Whether you’re an old hand on the fairgrounds or are looking forward to your first-ever visit, here are some things to know before you head on down to the 2026 New Mexico State Fair:
Exploring the fair
This year, the New Mexico State Fair is celebrating the centennial of the famous Route 66, and the team behind the fair is going all-out with events and attractions celebrating the best of the state, for a New Mexico road trip visitors can take on foot.
There’s a map of the fairgrounds available online to help guests plan their visits. Highlight sections include the midway, where rides and games are located, and nearby, the cultural pavilions. These include the Indian Village, Villa Hispana, and the African American Pavilion, all of which hold exhibitions on the people who make up New Mexico. The fair’s “Main Street” will then allow you to wander down to arts and crafts displays and the animal exhibits, which include cows, ducks, horses, rabbits, pigs, and even special shows featuring monkeys, snakes, and sea lions. The largest shows, though, will take place in the fair’s Coliseum, the large arena which holds major events and attractions.
Something “Spectacular”
There’s plenty of entertainment at the fair, and which draws your eye will depend on your mood and preferences. Some acts are “strolling,” including the fluffy, friendly Ambassadogs and the stilt-walking act. Down the fair’s “Adventure Alley,” you’ll find feats of derring-do like the extreme ski show and the Dueling Pirates High Dive.
But beyond all of these, every year, the New Mexico State Fair hosts its entertainment “spectaculars.” These are special events that happen on one day only, and can include live concerts, special guest appearances, and more. While the official fair website hasn’t yet posted the schedule for the spectaculars, some information is available. In particular, if you happen to be visiting on September 12, you’ll be there for the Route 66 Centennial Parade, featuring classic vintage cars.
Say “Yee-Haw” to the State Fair Rodeo
While there’s plenty of great entertainment at the fair, some of the most uniquely southwestern fair fun is to be had at the annual rodeo. The state fair rodeo is the largest rodeo in New Mexico, and includes competitions like bull riding, roping, and bareback riding. Each event has a long history and tradition within rodeo, and has specific rules that govern it, both for safety reasons and to keep the competition fair.
To attend the rodeo at the fair, you’ll need a ticket, either to one of the “concert and rodeo” events, or to one of the two “stand-alone” rodeo days. Whichever you pick, be aware that your ticket also includes admission to the fair, so be sure to enjoy all the attractions while you’re there!
Can’t-miss fair foods
While the rides, games, and other attractions at the fair are great, for many visitors, the main event is the food. New Mexico is a champion when it comes to fair foods, with a blend of All-American classics and local favorites. Guests can enjoy freshly fried funnel cakes, corn dogs, and fries, but the culinary fun doesn’t end there. The New Mexico State Fair has several signature foods that celebrate the state’s history, heritage, and produce.
One highlight every year is the famous Navajo Tacos, which consist of frybread topped with seasoned ground beef, shredded cheese, and other taco fixings. Some prefer to grab a frybread without the fillings for lighter fare, or get a dairy fix with the fair’s beloved green chile cheese curds. There’s also a competition for the most unique new fair food. But the showstopper of the cooking competitions is a New Mexico classic: the green chile cheeseburger competition. Guests can watch for themselves as chefs compete for the title of the fair’s best green chile cheeseburger.
Theme days
While any day is a good day to visit the New Mexico State Fair, you may want to be there for one of the fair’s theme days. These are also known as “Main Street Days,” and include Military and Veterans Appreciation Day, Science and Technology Day, a memorial event on 9/11, days honoring firefighters and law enforcement, and more. Each day will have events associated with it, and some have free or discounted tickets, like free tickets for veterans and active duty military members on Military and Veterans Appreciation Day.
These theme days are great options if you fit into the relevant theme category (i.e. families with children on Pathways to College Day, senior citizens on Seniors’ Celebration and Healthy Living Day, etc.), both for the potential to save some money (meaning more to spend on rides, games, and green chile cheeseburgers), and because the activities and events can be fun and informative. There aren’t any requirements to participate in the day’s theme, and all regular fair activities are still on, but be sure to check if any of the extra opportunities appeal before deciding when you want to visit the fair.
Getting your tickets
Now that you know what to expect and what to look forward to at this year’s New Mexico State Fair, all that’s left is to book your tickets! Tickets are cheaper if you book online, although they’re also available to purchase at the fairgrounds. Remember, while you should probably book a ticket with plenty of time to spare if you’re looking to attend a rodeo, concert, or special event, if you’re just after general admission, it can pay to wait and see if the fair hosts deals or sales, which they often do as opening day draws closer.
