Want to watch live sports in Alaska? You have quite a few teams to pick from. Whether you’re interested in baseball, hockey, volleyball, or even roller derby, there’s a hometown Alaskan team for you to cheer on.
The Last Frontier State is home to several Division I NCAA college sports teams as well as an array of other collegiate and amateur sports teams that are just as much fun to watch. Here are 33 that are worth rooting for.
Alaska Baseball League
The Alaska Baseball League is comprised of five teams located in four different Alaskan cities. It’s a collegiate summer baseball league that uses wood and wood composite bats and brings players from all over the country, including many who have gone on to play in the Major Leagues.
Mat-Su Miners
The Palmer-based Mat-Su Miners are the 2026 Alaska Baseball League Champions, winning 24 games and losing just 13 during the 2026 season. Over the years, approximately 400 former Miners have gone on to play professional baseball, with 72 players advancing to the Major Leagues.
The Mat-Su Miners were first established in 1976, originally called the Valley Green Giants. In 1980, the team changed its name to the Mat-Su Miners, as they’re known today.
Catch a game at their home field, Hermon Brothers Field. The scenic ballpark has gorgeous views of the Matanuska Valley, including Pioneer Peak.
Anchorage Glacier Pilots
The Anchorage Glacier Pilots were established in 1969, and they’re still going strong today.
They share the Mulcahy Baseball Stadium with the Anchorage Bucs, and the venue can hold up to 5,000 fans. The stadium’s gates open an hour before each game, with a concession stand to buy food and a souvenir stand with merchandise to support the team.
Anchorage Bucs
The Anchorage Bucs officially joined the Alaska Baseball League in 1981 after forming as a nonprofit baseball club the year prior. Originally, they were called the Cook Inlet Bucs, but they changed their name to the Anchorage Bucs in 1984.
Over the years, the team has won the ABL Championship 10 times. They play at Mulcahy Stadium.
Peninsula Oilers
Based out of the Kenai Peninsula, the Peninsula Oilers were originally founded in 1974. They took a year off in 2025 due to financial challenges, and resumed playing in 2026.
You can watch them play in Coral Seymour Memorial Ball Park in Kenai.
Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks
The Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks began as Athletes In Action (AIA) Baseball before they officially joined the Alaska Baseball League in 2001 as AIA Alaska Fire. In 2012, they relocated and are now known as the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks.
The team plays home games at Lee Jordan Field, which is located at the Loretta French Sports Complex in Anchorage.
Alaska Goldpanners Baseball
The Alaska Goldpanners are a collegiate team with roots dating back to 1959. While they were once a charter member of the Alaska Baseball League, they left the league in 2015.
The team is most famous for its Midnight Sun Game, which they play every summer in Fairbanks at Growden Memorial Field.
The late-night game is played without any artificial lighting, and it ends well after midnight, usually at 1 or 2 a.m. The game has been going on since 1906, and the Alaska Goldpanners have hosted it since 1960. The game often sells out, so buy tickets early.
More than 200 former Alaska Goldpanners have gone on to play in the major league, including Barry Bonds. Recently, former Alaska Goldpanner Rafael Flores joined the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Roller Derby
Alaska is home to several roller derby teams, including the Rage City Roller Derby, Denali Destroyers, and Fairbanks Roller Derby.
You can watch these teams play in bouts throughout the season, and they also have competitions during other times of year, including summer tournaments like the 49th Skate Roller Derby Tournament in August.
Rage City Roller Derby
Rage City Roller Derby is the first roller derby team in all of Alaska, and it also holds the distinction of being Anchorage’s only flat-track roller derby team.
The beloved local team is so popular that Anchorage Press Picks named it the “Best Sports Team in Anchorage” for six consecutive years, with five years at the top spot and one year at number two.

Team AK Roller Derby
Team Alaska Roller Derby brings players from all across Alaska to compete in flat-track roller derby.
The team was created to expand access to the sport, unite diverse players, and help players grow before returning to their hometown leagues to share their skills and expertise.
University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves
The University of Alaska Anchorage has 13 NCAA teams, providing plenty of opportunities to cheer for the Seawolves no matter which sport you enjoy the most.
Select from women’s and men’s basketball, cross country, skiing, and track and field, as well as women’s volleyball and gymnastics and men’s hockey.
The men’s hockey team is a Division I NCAA team. Its biggest rival is the Alaska Nanooks at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Each year, the two teams battle it out at the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup. This season, this event will take place as a six-game series held between November and February.
The women’s volleyball team is also a great team to watch. They take on teams from all over, including a four-game series, the “Alaska/Hawaii Challenge,” where they play against Hawaiian teams in Hilo.
The Alaska Airlines Center is the home field for many of the sports, and it has room for approximately 5,000 people.
University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Nanooks
University of Alaska Fairbanks has 10 sports teams to cheer for, including women’s and men’s basketball, cross-country, and skiing, in addition to the university’s women’s swimming and volleyball, and men’s ice hockey and rifle. Most sports are Division II, but the men’s ice hockey team is Division I.
The teams’ mascot is Nanook, which is the traditional Inuit word for a polar bear (generally spelled nanuq). The teams play at the Carlson Center, which seats 5,100 people.
