Labor Day weekend is one last excuse to squeeze a little fun out of summer. And you don’t even have to spend a lot of money to do it—or any money, actually.
Here are a handful of places to head in Iowa if you’re looking for something to do without spending money on admission.
Free Labor Day Weekend Concert — Cedar Falls
Sept. 5, 2026 | 7-8:30 p.m. | River Place Plaza
If you want classical tunes to serve as the background music to your Labor Day weekend, head to downtown Cedar Falls for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony’s annual free Labor Day Weekend Concert. The Sept. 5 performance takes place outdoors at River Place Plaza, so you’ll have the chance to listen to live music without buying a ticket.
This year’s program will feature the symphony’s woodwind section performing Dvořák’s “Serenade for Wind Instruments.” Bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in for an evening of music before summer officially winds down.
Free Labor Day Weekend Concert — Waverly
Sept. 6, 2026 | 7-8:30 p.m. | Kohlmann Park
Can’t make it to Cedar Falls? The same Labor Day Weekend Concert program heads to Waverly the following evening.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony will perform at Kohlmann Park on Sunday, Sept. 6. Like the Cedar Falls performance, the Waverly concert is free and takes place outdoors.
It’s a pretty straightforward Labor Day plan: Grab a lawn chair, find a spot in the park, and listen to live music as the holiday weekend comes to a close.
Labor Day Celebration — Madrid
Sept. 4-7, 2026 | Madrid
Madrid’s Labor Day Celebration takes over the community for the entire holiday weekend. The annual celebration runs Friday through Monday and includes music, tournaments, family activities, a car show, fireworks, and a parade. Oh, and you can’t forget the fan-favorite Lion’s Club Chicken Dinner.

Taste of the Junction Multicultural Festival — West Des Moines
Sept. 3-5, 2026 | Valley Junction
The annual Taste of the Junction Multicultural Festival brings a different flavor to Labor Day weekend in West Des Moines. The festival celebrates the people and cultures connected to historic Valley Junction, with live music, food, arts, and cultural programming. There will be everything from line dancing to salsa music and a kid zone.
All events are free and open to the public, while food and drinks are available for purchase.
40th Annual Labor Day Auction & Fire Boat Benefit — Okoboji

Spend Labor Day at the lake while supporting the Lakes Area Fire Boat. The 40th Annual Labor Day Auction & Fire Boat Benefit takes place at Parks Marina and The Barefoot Bar in Okoboji.
Stick around afterward for live music from The Last Call Band at 4 p.m.
The auction itself will involve spending if you decide to bid, and food and drinks are also available for purchase, so consider this one a free-to-attend option rather than a completely free day.
Fonda Labor Day Celebration — Fonda
Sept. 5-6, 2026 | Downtown Fonda
Fonda’s Labor Day Celebration packs a lot into two days. Saturday’s schedule includes a parade, bingo, rodeo, fireworks, a 5K walk/run, citywide garage sales, and the Central Iowa Truck Pullers. Sunday brings a street dance, demolition derby, and community brunch.
The celebration is organized by the Fonda Town and Country Boosters, with proceeds supporting local organizations, youth scholarships, and community activities.
Some individual activities may have their own costs, but there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the weekend’s community events for free.
Graettinger Labor Day Celebration — Graettinger

Graettinger has been celebrating Labor Day for generations. In fact, its Labor Day weekend event is billed as Iowa’s oldest continuous Labor Day celebration. We believe it—the 1890s were a long time ago!
The 2026 celebration runs Sept. 4-7 and plans to include a parade, carnival rides, street dances, a variety show, and queen coronation. The celebration’s downtown setting makes it easy to move between activities, and admission is free.
Labor Day Festival — Lucas
Sept. 5, 2026 | John L. Lewis Memorial Museum of Mining & Labor
For something a little different, head to Lucas for the Labor Day Festival at the John L. Lewis Memorial Museum of Mining & Labor. A fitting spot to be for the weekend, it sounds like.
The day’s schedule starts with a firemen’s breakfast and continues with a parade that starts at 11 a.m., with this year’s theme, “LABOR FOR AMERICA.”
Afterward, visitors can stick around for lunch, an antique tractor display, children’s pedal tractor pull, firemen’s water fights, and a free children’s drawing. The museum will also be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sutherland Labor Day Celebration — Sutherland

Sutherland has been holding its Labor Day Celebration since 1934, making it one of the town’s longest-running traditions. The town maintains a dedicated Labor Day calendar with the weekend’s events and activities, so it’s worth checking the schedule before you make the drive.
Expect a community picnic, concert, glow foam party, cornhole tournament, and more—all for free!
Catch free music at Water Works Park — Des Moines
Sept. 5-6, 2026 | Lauridsen Amphitheater
You don’t have to leave the Des Moines area for free Labor Day entertainment. Water Works Park’s Lauridsen Amphitheater has two free concerts scheduled for the holiday weekend.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, the Des Moines Symphony will present 7 Bridges: The Symphonic Eagles Experience at 7:30 p.m. The concert pairs the orchestra with 7 Bridges for a tribute to the music of the Eagles.
On Sunday, Sept. 6, Cinematic Magic for the Whole Family begins at 5:30 p.m. and is geared toward the younger ones with legendary film music (let it go!) and local vendors, kids’ activities, and food trucks.
Take a Freedom Rock road trip

Iowa’s Freedom Rock Tour gives you an excuse to get in the car and explore. Artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen created the project to honor veterans, with a Freedom Rock located in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. The original Freedom Rock is in Adair County near Menlo, and other rocks can be found throughout the state.
Pick a county—or a few—and make your own Labor Day road trip. The rocks are free to visit, and you can build the rest of your day around whatever you find along the way.
