The Miracle League of Greater Flint has set a goal of raising $75,000 for the completion of their Miracle League Ballfield in Mundy Township. The crowdfunding campaign, organized through the Michigan-based platform Patronicity, was jointly announced by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Miracle League of Greater Flint.
If the campaign achieves its crowdfunding goal by June 1st, the project will receive a matching grant through the MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) program. The PSCP program also includes a Universal Design and Accessibility Extension, which provides an additional $25,000 in matching funds if the project meets certain standards. The project aims to create a universally accessible playing field and inclusive space for recreational activities.
The Miracle Field will be the first of its kind in Genesee County, featuring a fully accessible, soft-surfaced baseball field. The facilities aim to accommodate children and adults with special needs, removing barriers that typical baseball fields may pose. The league has already begun developing the site with accessible parking, universally accessible restrooms, and a concession area. Once completed, the field will include surfacing, dugouts, bleachers, pathways, a scoreboard, and lighting.
The field will not only be used for baseball but will also host other inclusive activities such as holiday-themed activities, kickball, yoga, senior programs, and veterans’ programs. The Miracle League of Greater Flint will continue to work with other agencies that provide services for children and adults with disabilities.
The Public Spaces Community Places initiative is a collaborative effort of the MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League, and Patronicity that began in 2014. It allows local residents to contribute to the development of strategic projects in their communities through crowdfunding and receive a matching grant from MEDC. As of March 21, 2024, MEDC has provided over $12.4 million in matching grants for community improvement projects throughout Michigan.
