Alamo City Goes the Distance This Weekend With Inaugural Marathon
The San Antonio Marathon takes place this weekend. Here’s everything you need to know.
The first-ever San Antonio Marathon takes place this weekend, with exciting events being held December 5-7. According to the marathon’s website, the event is “rooted in the vibrant culture and community,” and “is brought to life through a collaboration between San Antonio Sports, the City of San Antonio, Visit San Antonio, Centro, and Olympic gold medalist-turned-marathon champion Meb Keflezighi.”
As of writing, registration is sold out for each of the three runs, but don’t fret. You can enjoy the experience just as much as a viewer as you would if you were throwing on your running shoes and hitting the pavement with the pack. Runners are set to complete a 5K, a half-marathon, and a marathon through the Pearl District, and there will be an abundance of holiday cheer along the route.
The Pearl District will be decorated with holiday lights, and there are plenty of places for you to grab a hot drink and a bite to eat as you wait for the runners to pass through. The marathon and half-marathon routes on December 7 both start downtown and finish at Hemisfair near Civic Park, so you can choose a viewing spot that works best for you there, too.

The marathon supports a good cause
This year’s San Antonio Marathon is set to benefit Face the Fight®, an organization that’s dedicated to helping reduce veteran suicide rates. Speaking about the decision to partner with Face the Fight®, San Antonio Sports CEO Jenny Carnes said, “As Military City USA, we couldn’t think of a more fitting partner.” Military members, veterans, and first responders were all offered special discounts on registration fees.
Sponsors for the exciting new event include Corona Premier and Fleet Feet. H-E-B will also be providing wellness-themed snacks for those finishing the race to help them with their cool-downs and recoveries.
