Severe Storms Forecasted for Southern New England

The WBZ NEXT Weather Team has issued a severe weather alert for potential storms this Sunday afternoon and evening.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

Except for the Cape and Islands, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been declared for most of southern New England. Strong to possibly severe storms are expected from mid-afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of the region under an ‘enhanced’ risk for severe storms, foreseeing a busy afternoon. These storms can bring damaging winds, hail, torrential downpours, and even a low risk for a tornado (about 2% currently).

Storm Start Time

After morning showers, there will be a short break before scattered showers and storms begin early to mid-afternoon. The storm line will move east into the evening. The critical period for potential storms is from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This Sunday will also be significantly warmer and more humid, with temperatures nearing 90° and dew points in the 70s. These conditions provide the instability required for these storms.

Lingering Showers on Monday

There may be a slight chance for some lingering showers on Monday. Still, overall, we anticipate a much drier and pleasant day, followed by increasing temperatures mid-week as we approach the 4th of July holiday. It is crucial to keep an eye on the radar this Sunday.

The NEXT Weather Team will be tracking the storms throughout the day on WBZ.com, WBZ-TV, and CBS News Boston.
