The National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington was named one of the most beautiful museums in the world by Prix Versailles. Here’s why.

Arlington’s National Medal of Honor Museum was recently named one of the most beautiful museums in the world by a global design and architecture award program called Prix Versailles. Every year, Prix Versailles curates a list of the most visually striking museums, and this year, only seven made the cut. Yes, you heard that right: Only seven museums across the globe made the “World’s Most Beautiful Museums List 2026,” and the National Medal of Honor Museum was one of them.

CultureMap Dallas notes that it was also the only museum located in the Western Hemisphere to receive the honor. In January, the National Medal of Honor Museum received another public nod from USA Today, which listed the institution as the best new museum in the country. If you’ve visited since it first opened in March of 2025, it’s easy to see why everyone is praising this expansive space dedicated to the 3,528 individuals who have received a Medal of Honor thus far.

Not only is the emotional weight of the storytelling here extremely moving, but the physical design of the building itself also led to the museum’s ranking on Prix Versaille’s list. Linbeck Group’s President, Tommy Cole, said of the National Medal of Honor Museum, ” — Every member of our team understood that we were doing more than just constructing a building; we were providing a home where the stories of the courage and sacrifice of America’s most cherished heroes will live on for generations.”

Specific elements of the design include five megacolumns used to structurally support the museum, with each column representing a different branch of the Armed Forces. The US Space Force is represented by a central oculus that beautifully captures natural light. As visitors meander through the building, they’re met with glass elevators, spiral staircases, and immersive galleries dedicated to the lives, sacrifices, and legacies of the people who received Medals of Honor.

The museum was carefully designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects

The National Medal of Honor Museum was designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. On the company’s official website, it writes: “On its five-acre site, the Museum makes a strong statement in support of the Medal of Honor recipients it celebrates, and enhances and improves pedestrian accessibility and connectivity through and around the lakefront site. The Museum’s architectural design symbolizes both the weight of responsibility carried by Medal of Honor recipients and the inspirational virtues they embody—courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and patriotism.”

For Prix Versailles, these elements heavily contributed to the museum being listed as one of the most beautiful in the world, especially because the design “is inseparable from its mission.” The review went on to praise specific aspects of the work completed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, with Prix Versailles saying, “The steel-clad Exhibition Hall is a monumental space that reflects the strength of character that is forged in combat. That structure is suspended 12 metres in the air above a landscaped ‘Field of Honor,’ a central, open-air courtyard that serves as both threshold and gathering space.”

Bassam Komati is a partner at the architecture firm, and he said the group was touched by this latest honor.  “We are especially moved by the award’s celebration of architecture’s narrative power and its ability to reveal strength through harmony, sensitivity, and shared purpose — values deeply aligned with this project,” he said.

Komati added, “Shaped through close collaboration with our client and an exceptional multidisciplinary team, the Museum gives form to a shared vision for a civic place of reflection and inspiration, honoring those who serve the common good while affirming architecture’s capacity to embody our highest ideals.”
