Key topics to be covered at this year’s summit include bullying, suicide, critical incidents, trauma, and victimization among children and adolescents. Specific training sessions will address gang awareness, School Risk Management Plans, reportable offenses, suicide prevention, and Sandy Hook Promise’s SAVE Promise Club. The CFSS has expanded its staff to include regional liaisons who will offer tailored support to school districts across North Carolina, facilitating stronger connections and support systems.
Executive Director Karen W. Fairley highlighted the significant growth in staff since the previous summit, emphasizing the potential for deeper engagement with school staff and law enforcement. State Superintendent Catherine Truitt reiterated the importance of the newly added regional liaisons, noting that the additional staff will enhance the CFSS’s ability to be a comprehensive resource on school safety.
New to RISE 2024 is a parent/student component, scheduled for the final two days of the summit, which will cover topics such as internet safety, family engagement, and resilience. Fairley underlined the crucial role of parents in school safety, stating that community dynamics directly influence school environments and vice versa.
The CFSS Student Engagement Team has also organized a contest for K-12 students in North Carolina public schools with the theme “Shine a Light on What a Safer School Looks Like.” Winners will be announced during the summit’s opening ceremony. While training sessions are closed to the media, representatives are invited to attend the opening ceremony and a luncheon on July 29 featuring remarks from state, New Hanover County, and City of Wilmington officials.
