Michigan residents seeking to improve their health and wellness habits now have access to a comprehensive, free online education program. Michigan State University Extension has launched “My Way to Wellness,” an innovative digital platform that makes nutrition education accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

A flexible approach to nutrition *& wellness education

The program offers 10 self-paced lessons covering essential topics, from healthy eating and portion control to physical activity and food safety. Each 30-minute lesson features interactive video modules with closed captioning and voice-over narration, making the content accessible to diverse learning styles.

Program participants can access the courses through MSU’s D2L learning platform after creating a free guest account. The flexibility allows users to complete lessons at their own pace using any internet-connected device.

Evidence-based content and proven results

My Way to Wellness bases its curriculum on established nutritional standards from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate recommendations. The program provides practical guidance on:

  • Meal planning and grocery shopping strategies
  • Budget-friendly healthy eating tips
  • Safe food handling and storage
  • Meeting daily physical activity goals
  • Reading and understanding food labels

Recent survey data from 94 program participants demonstrated notable improvements in several areas, including increased fruit and vegetable consumption, enhanced physical activity levels, and better food safety practices. Based on this feedback, the program underwent updates in 2023 to further improve the learning experience.

Program accessibility & support options

Participants can choose between two free learning formats:

  • Self-paced individual learning
  • Group cohort learning with guidance from an MSU Extension Community Nutrition Instructor (when available)

The program is funded through the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. While designed to support SNAP-eligible Michigan residents, the program is available to all interested participants at no cost.

Individuals or organizations interested in learning more about My Way to Wellness can complete the Program Request Form to connect with an MSU Extension team member.
