The “Stories In Storefronts” StoryWalk has launched in downtown Howell, featuring the engaging children’s book, “Tallulah The Mermaid and the Great Lakes Pledge” by local author Denise Brennan-Nelson. The initiative spreads 16 pages of the story across different business locations, creating an immersive reading experience that combines literacy, physical activity, and community engagement.

Launched during the Howell Carnegie District Library’s Summer Reading Kick-Off Event, this collaborative project between Great Start Livingston and Downtown Howell was made possible through MI-LEAP literacy grant funding.

Robin Schutz, Coordinator for Great Start Livingston, shared about the StoryWalk, “We’re thrilled to bring this literacy adventure to downtown Howell. It’s a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses, enjoy fresh air, and practice reading.”

How to participate in the StoryWalk

The free activity, which runs through August, begins at Oh Crumbs! Bread Co. and concludes at the Howell Carnegie District Library. Each stop features a page from the story along with an interactive activity, making it an engaging experience for young readers and their families. Participants can find a complete route map online.

The StoryWalk route includes diverse local businesses such as Simply Cherry Collection, Vibology, Howell Western Wear, and many others, creating a path that showcases both the children’s story and downtown Howell’s vibrant business community.

Anne Ferguson from Montpelier, Vermont, originally conceived the StoryWalk concept in partnership with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, and she maintains trademark ownership of this innovative community reading initiative.
