The Florida Department of Education and Volunteer Florida have announced their annual Black History Month contests, offering students across the state chances to win educational scholarships and recognition. “Florida is committed to teaching students about African American history and the role African Americans have played in Florida’s success,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., emphasizing the educational value of the program.

The program features three distinct contests:
Art Contest (Grades K-3)
- Students submit original two-dimensional artwork
- Four winners receive $100 gift cards for school supplies
- Winners also get one-year Florida State Parks passes
Essay Contest (Grades 4-12)
- Six winners across elementary, middle, and high school levels
- Winners receive two-year Florida College Plan scholarships
- Additional $100 gift card for school supplies
- Essays must focus on impactful Florida-based African Americans
- 500-word maximum length requirement
Excellence in Education Award
- Open to full-time educators
- Four winners selected
- $2,500 prize from Volunteer Florida
- Nominations accepted from principals, teachers, parents, and students
Volunteer Florida CEO Josie Tamayo highlighted the program’s significance, stating, “Florida goes the extra mile to recognize the immense and historical contributions of African Americans in our great state.”
