Honor the past and celebrate the present at this Día de los Muertos celebration
Virginia’s Latino Farmers Market is hosting a special Día de los Muertos celebration on November 1. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Latino Farmers Market is celebrating Día de los Muertos in style. The community-driven marketplace, located at 3401 Courthouse Road in North Chesterfield, is currently in the process of building a traditional ofrenda, or altar, ahead of the November 1 festivities. For those unfamiliar with the Mexican tradition, ofrendas are created to honor loved ones who have passed away. If you’d like to include a framed photo of someone you’ve lost in the Latino Farmers Market community ofrenda, you’re encouraged to bring it by before October 25.
Framed photos must be 5×7 or smaller. When you arrive at the Courthouse Road location, there will be a staff member located at the information desk who can take the photo from you. The market’s Instagram post notes that “photos will be respectfully discarded” after Día de los Muertos, but if you’d like to have yours returned to you, you can discuss that with the staffer as you’re dropping it off.
The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been tasked with setting up and designing the community altar. In addition to being able to see the ofrenda, a variety of items will be for sale on November 1, and activities will also take place throughout the day.

Here’s what to expect on Día de los Muertos
The Latino Farmers Market Día de los Muertos celebration will be held on November 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be handmade crafts, Latin-inspired foods, locally grown produce, and baked goods available for purchase. Live music, cultural celebrations, and performances are also scheduled. There will be traditional Día de los Muertos-inspired face painting available, which is a great way for you and your family to fully immerse yourself in the day’s culture.
While Día de los Muertos is a day of remembrance, it’s meant to be one of community celebration. The Latino Farmers Market is committed to honoring this experience while also ensuring that everyone is able to access the healthy, fresh food they deserve.
