Hungover in Houston? Try these 7 local cures

Whether you’re looking for a savory filling meal or simply want to melt into a puddle at a spa, these hangover remedies will cure what ails ya.

There’s a scene from “Parks and Recreation” where several characters get sick. It’s a tremendous couple of minutes of physical comedy as they writhe on the floor in agony, their aches and pains taking over. Chris Traeger, played by Rob Lowe, utters the line, “I was dying earlier today, and then I died. Now I’m dead.”

This scene is about food poisoning, but the vibes apply to being hungover, as well. You feel crummy, your head and body are revolting, the room might be spinning (or at least is way too bright), and you’re desperate for something to help ease the pain.

Luckily, there are several quality hangover cures across Houston. We’re sharing seven of our favorite solutions.

1. Grab a breakfast sammy at Hot Bagel Shop

2015 S Shepherd Dr. #900, Houston, TX 77019

Waking up with a hangover is a bummer. Curing it with a hot, fulfilling breakfast is a terrific remedy. Hot Bagel Shop offers one of the best choices on the block with its Classic Breakfast Sandwich. An everything or onion garlic bagel is likely the top option for a hangover cure. However, you can choose anything on the menu, including seasonal bagels like pumpkin or Halloween. Add egg, bacon, cheese, and a hash brown to the sandwich for the ultimate feast. And if you’re feeling exceptionally feisty, the mini dogs with mustard are an excellent bite-sized treat.

2. Have a spa day at River Oaks Drip Spa

5161 San Felipe St. Suite 120, Houston, TX 77056

Tracey Allely is a registered nurse with over 25 years of clinical experience in acute care, and she founded River Oaks Drip Spa to help people feel like their best selves, whether last night was completely sober or a hot mess. If the latter, you’ve got plenty of services to help tackle that hangover. IV hydration therapy provides quick relief and lasting energy, cryotherapy reinvigorates the body with a chill, and the infrared sauna blasts heat to help you relax and detoxify. On top of that, red light therapy, dynamic compression boots, shot packages, and phototherapy patches will all help make that hangover a distant memory.

3. Get your brunch on at Piggy’s

3412 W Lamar St, Houston, TX 77019

Should a breakfast sandwich alone not be enough, Piggy’s in River Oaks has a whole host of options to help you power through. The Country Hash and Hot Mess Benedict are massive meals filled with finger-licking-good comfort food that will stick to your ribs in the best way. And if you’re one of the people who believe the best hangover cure is to continue drinking, the Bloody Mary Deluxe, Frozen Mimosa, and the Breakfast Shot—a combo of bacon, whiskey, butterscotch, and freshly squeezed orange juice—will all give you a boost.

4. Breathe some sea air at the beach

Hopefully, you can do this one with a friend who is less hungover, since it does require some driving (or taking a rideshare). But the result of breathing in some air from the sea can really clear out the cobwebs and give your mind a refresh. Both Quintana Beach and Galveston offer sandy spots to stake your claim, and there are picnic areas if you’d like to bring some grub with you. Stroll the boardwalk at Pleasure Pier, watch the sunrise at Fort Crockett, or just dip your toes in the sand and feel the energy rushing back. The west end of Galveston includes Jamaica Beach, a small beach resort with big coastal charm. There are good spots for a snack, too, including the aptly named Shrimp N Stuff

5. Let out your rage at Break Life

5805 Centralcrest St, Houston, TX 77092

Some people become extra friendly when they drink. Others might get a bit sad or angry; sometimes, those feelings can carry over into the following day. Why not channel that rage into a positive mindset and destroy a lot of stuff in a controlled environment? That’s the idea behind Break Life. Kaija Pack has spent more than two decades working in foster care and saw how alternative therapies allow people to express themselves, opening up Break Life in 2021 to help them do just that. You’ve got lots of options here, too. The classic Break Session includes VIP upgrades, mystery bins, and a car demolition adventure. There are also Paint Session and Scream Session offerings, giving you endless opportunities to be destructive without worrying about any concerned texts or embarrassing videos on social media the following morning.

6. Stretch with some goat yoga at Rose Therapeutic Farm

1324 Peach Ridge Rd, Brookshire, TX 77423

My two favorite stretches are Child’s Pose and Good Morning. They require minimal effort and feel fantastic, particularly if you’re experiencing any lower back pain. That’s a common ailment after a night out, and shaking out all of those cobwebs is a helpful treatment for dealing with a hangover. While you could certainly do a few yoga poses at home, doing it with goats will brighten your spirits a lot more quickly. Rose Therapeutic Farm offers goat yoga classes for participants of all skill levels. Feeling those tiny hooves perched on your back is like getting a gentle massage, and snuggling up with one of your new friends is a perfect way to bleat…er, beat the hungover blues.

7. Try the Mack Daddy’s Hangover Burger from The Rouxpour

Multiple locations

When all else fails, go with a dish that has “hangover” in its name. Of course, The Rouxpour doesn’t specifically state whether Mack Daddy’s Hangover Burger will cure a hangover or give you one, but it’s loaded with an impressive array of toppings. The burger costs $22 and is a ½-pound Angus Beef patty with cheese, bacon, blackened shrimp, potato cake, and an onion ring. If that isn’t enough, Mack also tosses on a creamy Gouda cheese sauce, crawfish tails, and jalapeño sausage. If you’re nodding your head and thinking, “But can I add more?” you’re in luck—throw a fried egg on there for an extra $1.50. With four restaurants across Houston, Katy, Friendswood, and Sugar Land, you’ll have no shortage of burger opportunities.
