Let’s get crafty! It’s back-to-school season for the kids, and we can’t help wanting to learn something new, too. Not math—we’re talking about a cool new hobby or artistic technique that will be fun to try out (and show off to friends, of course!).
Creative types know: art isn’t always paint on canvas. At a DFW-based class or workshop, challenge yourself by taking a calligraphy lesson, a pasta-rolling class, or a handheld crafting workshop to create beautiful items that you can take home and cherish.
No matter what you choose, you’ll enjoy developing new skills—and potentially discovering hidden talents—alongside other people in a casual and fun environment. As a bonus, many of these classes offer ways for you to continue practicing at home, so the learning doesn’t end when you leave.
August is a time of new beginnings, so embrace the season of change and sign up for one of these fun classes.
1. Tiles Workshop
Location: Various locations in Dallas, Frisco, and Fort Worth
Cost: $109 per person; all materials and take-home lamp included
Ever seen a Turkish lamp glow through colorful glass tiles and been in awe? Now you can learn to make one yourself at Tiles Workshop, a mosaic art class where you can learn how to make your own lamp (and eat traditional Turkish snacks of baklava and tea, too!).
At one of these classes, instructors will guide you through arranging geometric patterns on a lamp with hand-cut glass pieces and beads. Make it your own, then take your lamp home to enjoy. If you love it, you can even buy DIY mosaic lamp kits to work on in your own time, which would make for thoughtful and creative gifts for friends.
2. Sip & Script

Interested in hand lettering, calligraphy, or just improving your handwriting? Sip & Script offers many classes throughout DFW for beginners, teaching different styles of calligraphy and lettering, as well as specialized classes on pumpkin lettering, place card lettering, and ornament lettering. 3. Tutugether Texas

You may not realize it, but rug tufting is about to be your new favorite obsession. At Tutugether Texas, make your own designs come to life with hands-on instruction in tufting—a method of weaving using a handheld machine to punch yarn through fabric.
Simply make your own design (or choose from previously completed rugs) in advance, so it’ll be ready to project onto a canvas for tracing when you show up to class. Flowers, animated characters, and even renderings of your own beloved pets are cute options. From there, choose your own colors to create the perfect masterpiece.
Afterward, Tutugether will apply backing and trim your new rug so it’s ready to display at home. It’s so fun, you’ll want to return again and again.
4. Ephemera Terrariums & Plant Shop

This class is for those with non-green thumbs, with instructors teaching you how to plant and care for plants, as well as how to decorate with moss, mushrooms, and tiny toys to create whatever theme you want.
Carry on the hobby at home by purchasing an at-home terrarium kit that comes with the supplies, plants, and decorations, plus video instructions, starting at $30.
5. Il Modo Pasta Making Class
Location: 714 Main Street, Fort Worth
Cost: $80 per person; includes everything you need and a recipe card to take home
Discover a delicious new hobby at the popular Il Modo Pasta Making Class, which sells out quickly. This Italian restaurant offers 90-minute lessons on making your own pasta, starting from the dough and ending in a finished dish that will change the way you think about pasta forever.
Enjoy light appetizers and wine (for an additional cost) during the class, which also makes for a fun date night.
6. The Craft Guild

From soap-making workshops to bookbinding classes, the Craft Guild is full of interesting and unique opportunities to try your hand at something new. Internationally renowned artists with a variety of experiences teach different, hands-on classes (which range from six to eight weeks) and workshops (which are one-time events).
This is a go-to spot for finding new hobbies, including sewing, pottery making, painting your pet, making jewelry, woodworking, and more. There is even a special Young Artists program just for kids.
7. Dallas Makerspace

Cost: Classes vary; membership is $72/month
The nonprofit community workshop Dallas Makerspace offers a dedicated spot for seasoned creatives and new hobbyists to learn something new. Take a class on rubber stamp making, ceramics arts, glass flameworking, acrylic painting, wax working, embroidery, bookbinding, acting skills, and so much more.
There is even a Bob Ross-certified oil painting class, where you can learn how to create a beautiful masterpiece that you get to take home with you.
8. Creative Arts Center of Dallas

Cost: Starting from $100 for a workshop, $210 for a short course, and $320 for a full session
Level up your hobby game with a more intense lesson at Creative Arts Center of Dallas, which offers one-to-four session workshops, four-week short courses, and six-to-eight-week full sessions. Options include fiber work, ceramics, mosaics, painting, photography, printmaking and paper arts, and stone carving among other creative mediums.
