Meal kit delivery in Michigan: 11 best local (& healthy!) options

Whether you’re in need of quick breakfast, lunch, or dinner options, these Michigan meal kit delivery services are made to order.

In our family’s ongoing debate of what we would spend our money on if we happened to win big in a Michigan lottery, I am very clear on where my money would go: a personal chef. I would love nothing more than to have every meal made for me without having to lift a finger or think about a meal plan.

In lieu of lottery millions and a personal chef, however, a Michigander can still turn to one of these local (and healthy!) Michigan meal kit delivery services. With a few national options and some farm-fresh, local Michigan-made meals, there’s something for everyone.

1. CookUnity Midwest Meal Delivery Service

Delivery: Throughout Michigan, check your zip code to confirm

Cost: Starting at $14/serving, plus delivery

Claiming to be the first of its kind, CookUnity Midwest Meal Delivery Service says it’s the first chef-to-delivery meal delivery. The meals are prepared weekly by real chefs and arrive fresh, and not frozen, so they’re ready to simply be heated and served. Some of the delicious options include Thai Panang Curry with Beef & Jasmine Rice, Mediterranean Chicken & Grain Bowl with Lemon Vinaigrette, or a Rainbow Quinoa Poke Bowl with Seasonal Vegetables & Citrus Dressing.

You can choose from a 4-meal weekly meal plan up to a 16-meal plan. (The more meals you order, the cheaper the cost is per serving.) All orders also have a $9.99 or $11.99 delivery fee, which varies based on your location. The service does deliver throughout the Midwest, but you’ll need to confirm your zip code to ensure they deliver to your area. For reference, I live in a pretty rural area in Southeast Michigan, and delivery is available to us.

2. Mom’s Meals

Delivery: Nationwide, check your zip code to confirm

Cost: $9.49/meal

Mom’s Meals is a unique program that delivers nutritional meals to people with medical needs who may not be able to grocery shop or prepare their own meals. The meals can be purchased directly or, for some individuals, are available for free or at a low price under certain insurance plans and circumstances, such as individuals using Medicaid or Medicare.

Mom’s Meals focuses on “nutrition as medicine,” and meals can be tailored to specific dietary requirements (including Kosher and Halal) and medical needs (such as diabetes and heart-friendly), but are meant to support overall wellness. The meals are heat-and-serve and good for up to 14 days in the fridge. It’s not a Michigan-specific program, but we were able to confirm shipping to southeast Michigan is available. You can also check qualifications online if you’re a caregiver, or set up a self-pay account for more information.

3. Clean Plates Detroit

Delivery: Most Detroit zip codes

Cost: Prices range from $96-$256

With a claim to fame as Metro Detroit’s primary meal delivery service, Clean Plates Detroit is comprised of local chefs and nutritionists on a mission to serve the people of Detroit delicious, nutritious food. They’re highly focused on the best quality possible, even right down to the containers, which are biodegradable and plastic-free. All food and ingredients are local and fresh, with steroid and hormone-free grass-fed beef and free-range chicken. Meat and poultry are Halal, and nothing is frozen.

Clean Plates Detroit services most Detroit zip codes (including Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties) for delivery, and they offer pick-up as well. Customers can choose a meal pack option, purchasing a pack of meals all at once, or a meal plan with ongoing, regular delivery. A meal plan requires a minimum of six meals per week, but the plan option saves $1 per meal and is split into two deliveries, allowing customers to choose from each week’s menu for more variety.

4. Home Chef

Delivery: Nationwide

Cost: Prices range with plans, but can be as low as $60/month

Okay, clearly, we know Home Chef is not Michigan-specific. But it is a meal kit delivery service that I, as a Michigander, have personally tried and had a wonderful experience with. I will admit that, as much as I am someone who loves food, I do not love cooking equally. I also happen to have a lot of kids, and the never-ending chore of meal planning, shopping, prepping, and cooking gets exhausting.

I loved Home Chef because it took away all of the mental energy and a big part of the physical effort, too, by letting me choose weekly meals from a pre-made meal plan (or skip if none sounded tasty or we didn’t need them that week) and shipping all the ingredients to my house. All the components came separately with a clear, easy-to-follow recipe card. It was so simple to follow, in fact, that I took things one step further and made our Home Chef meal days kid cooking days—it felt like a win-win where I was off the hook in the kitchen, and the kids had an easy way to start learning more skills.

I eventually stopped my subscription because we traveled so much with kids’ sporting events, but I truly believe it saved me money, stress, and mental energy, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

5. Hungryroot

Delivery: Nationwide

Cost: Dinners start around $8/serving

Hungryroot is a blend between grocery delivery and a meal delivery kit, because it provides both ready-made meals and shoppable meal plans and recipes. You can shop right from the plan’s recipes or meal plans, so the ingredients will be shipped right to you, ready to create the meal you choose. Most recipes, they claim, take 15 minutes or less to cook once you have all the ingredients on hand.

Hungryroot will suggest options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. That way, you have ready-to-grab options when you’re done noshing on your healthy dinner. I mean, you gotta have snacks on hand, right? Boxes also include a free gift, and any food box over $70 receives free shipping.

6. Harvest Kitchen

Delivery: Ann Arbor areas

Cost: $10-$20

Harvest Kitchen is a meal delivery service that serves the Ann Arbor area in Michigan. The business has a partnership with Tantre Farm in Chelsea, Mich., which allows it to provide farm-to-table meal options. You can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner options and choose customized meals, such as vegan, vegetarian, or paleo.

If you want to try the meals before subscribing or just want a delicious, farm-fresh meal, you can also pick up a pre-made Harvest Kitchen meal at participating Ann Arbor locations, including Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market, Agricole Farm Stop, Vestergaard Farms, and Argus Farm Stop.  You can also order a week’s worth of meals to try it out or order without a membership. You can also text Harvest Kitchen at (734) 805-9634 with any questions.

7. Golden State Chef Co.

Delivery: Metro Detroit

Cost: Starting at $8/meal

Of all the Michigan meal kits we have discussed so far, I have to say the Golden State Chef Co., based in Metro Detroit, may just look like the most downright delicious. As just one example, this week, customers have the option of meals such as Sesame Ginger Beef and Cabbage, a Pork Potsticker Bowl, or a Cajun Chicken and Sausage bowl. The variety and quality may be attributed to founder and professional Chef Ryan Klink, who has served his country as an infantryman, studied at the Culinary Academy in San Francisco, cooked for celebrities, and traveled through Europe learning new techniques, and working at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Chicago before settling down to open his business in Michigan.

Golden State Chef Co. drops a new menu every week, and customers can pre-order meals and choose from pickup or delivery. If you want delivery, you will need to pay a one-time fee of $20 for the reusable insulated bag and ice pack that you can then swap out weekly for your next batch of meals. If delivery isn’t your thing or you need a restock, there’s also a Grab-and-Go fridge with weekly meals located in Royal Oak. All meals are fully cooked and just need to be reheated to enjoy.

8. Eat Well Meal Prep

Delivery: Southeast Michigan

Cost: $15/meal

Eat Well Meal Prep is a local Michigan meal delivery service that specializes in balanced nutrition, with each meal including 6 ounces of protein, carbohydrates, and fresh vegetables. The meals are designed by a registered dietician and are especially helpful for people leading an active lifestyle.

New menus are released every Sunday and Wednesday, so customers have variety in their week. There’s no subscription required—you can simply order your meals when you’re ready, pay online when you order, and choose from delivery through southeast Michigan or pick-up from the Clawson location. Delivery does require a five-meal minimum, and the company says they can accommodate special diets or preferences.

After browsing through their menus, I also have to say the prices are extremely reasonable, especially when you consider the cost of fast food these days. I mean, a $15 flank steak stir-fry with peppers, onions, snow peas, and fluffy basmati rice? I may be signing up soon!

9. MI Meals

Delivery: Pick-up in Royal Oak and Shelby Township

Cost: Starting at $5

For Michigan residents close to Royal Oak and Shelby Township, MI Meals provides a healthy and local pick-up option. The meals are macro-friendly (meaning they might appeal to some athletes or bodybuilders, or just anyone looking to track the nutrition of their food more) and balanced with a mix of carbs, proteins, and veggies.

MI Meals offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and as long as you order by Friday at 11:59 pm, your order will be ready for pickup the following Monday at 10 am. With options like buffalo chicken mac and cheese, tacos, or peanut butter banana oats, you really can’t go wrong.

10. Nourish Kitchen

Delivery: Rockford, Belmont, Creston, and Downtown Grand Rapids

Cost: Starting at $3.50

Heading over to the west side of the state, we have Nourish Kitchen, which offers entrees, soups, salads, breakfast, snacks, and even cookies, all for delivery or pick-up. Customers can order by Friday night for delivery the next Tuesday, and choose from a new weekly menu every Wednesday.

Some delicious options include everything from freshly cut crudites and dip, carnitas, taco salad, and even Chef James’ famous Mom’s chocolate chip cookies, because everyone needs a treat now and then.

11. Meal Prep Proz

Delivery: Michigan state-wide in the lower peninsula

Cost: Starting at $5

Meal Prep Proz, based in Midland, Mich., has an in-person pick-up option for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks, or for an annual $45 fee (you can also do a free 7-day trial!), a membership option that allows the meals to be shipped statewide and customized to your profile. The menu changes weekly and includes balanced options like chicken and orzo, tomato bisque, cheese and spinach ravioli, and of course, a sweet treat.

The goal of the business, according to their website, is to make healthy food accessible to everyone. While delivery is available to the entire lower peninsula of Michigan, there is a $10 delivery charge for tri-city areas and a $20 charge outside of that (plus a minimum $200 order requirement).
