New Holocaust Education Center to Open in Downtown Phoenix

Maricopa County just approved a new state-of-the-art Holocaust Center in downtown Phoenix. Here’s what we know so far.

On October 23, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved funding for the Arizona Holocaust Education Center.

Located in Downtown Phoenix, the center, also known as the Hilton Family Holocaust Education Center, is expected to open in April 2027. It hopes to welcome up to 50,000 visitors annually, marking it as the first institution of its kind in Arizona. The funding includes a $2 million allocation from Galvin’s Maricopa County Community Solutions Funding.

The facility will feature immersive exhibitions on two of its three floors, focusing on the narratives of Holocaust survivors and educating visitors on historical genocides. This initiative seeks to foster an understanding of diverse backgrounds and promote educational outreach within the community. Additionally, the funding will help subsidize admission fees for local public school students, aligning with Arizona’s educational standards on Holocaust education.

Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin emphasized the importance of Holocaust education in light of rising anti-Semitism and the absence of such a center in Phoenix. He highlighted the need for cultural preservation and education to prevent future atrocities.

The Arizona Jewish Historical Society will collaborate on this project, which aims to provide a comprehensive learning experience for students. Steve Hilton, Project Chair and Board Member at the society, expressed gratitude to the Board of Supervisors for their support. He noted the center’s experiential approach to history as a means to inspire positive action among students. The county budget supports supervisors with Community Solutions Funding to advance strategic goals and public benefits.
