Rudy Giuliani Disbarred from Practicing Law in New York

Rudy Giuliani, the personal attorney of former President Donald Trump, was disbarred from practicing law in New York on Tuesday after spreading falsehoods about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. The New York appeals court ordered Giuliani’s name to be “stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-large” in the state and forbade him from practicing law in any capacity.

Giuliani, who previously held positions as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan and mayor of New York City, was admitted to the state’s bar in 1969. Giuliani’s spokesman, Ted Goodman, denounced the decision as politically and ideologically corrupt, and plans to appeal.

The disciplinary charges against Giuliani arose from allegations that he made false and misleading statements about the 2020 election being rife with fraud and stolen from Trump. Despite multiple legal challenges by Trump and his campaign, there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Giuliani’s law license was suspended in New York in June 2021 based on the court’s claim of “uncontroverted evidence” that he made false statements that “immediately threatened the public interest.” He faced 20 disciplinary charges, of which 16 were proven during a six-day hearing.

The appeals court agreed with the hearing referee’s findings, stating that the 16 falsehoods perpetuated by Giuliani were deliberate and intended to deceive. The court emphasized the severity of Giuliani’s misconduct, stating that he actively contributed to the national strife that followed the 2020 Presidential election.

Among the baseless claims made by Giuliani were allegations of illegal votes in Philadelphia, fraudulent ballot delivery in Michigan, and votes cast by deceased individuals in Georgia. The court’s decision to disbar Giuliani comes on the heels of a federal judge holding him liable for defaming two former election workers in Georgia and a jury ordering him to pay them $148 million. Consequently, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy.

In addition to being disbarred, Giuliani faces state charges in Fulton County, Georgia, and Arizona due to alleged plots to overturn the election results in those states. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
