Taylor Sheridan is setting his newest show in Frisco. Here’s everything you need to know.
“Yellowstone.” “1883.” “Tulsa King.” “Landman.”These shows have been taking the American public by storm over the last few years, and creator/co-creator Taylor Sheridan is hoping to make even more magic on the set of his upcoming series, “Frisco King.” That’s right—Sheridan decided to turn Texas’s safest suburb into the backdrop for his “Tulsa King” spinoff starring Samuel L. Jackson, and within good reason. Frisco has seen a steady population increase in the last two decades and a host of developments alongside it. There’s the PGA Frisco headquarters and golf course, all those new schools, and of course, “The Star,” AKA the practice facility of the Dallas Cowboys. It seems like expanding into Hollywood is the logical next step.
Following Jackson’s character Russell Lee Washington Jr., who originally appeared on the series “Tulsa King” opposite Sylvester Stallone, “Frisco King” will air on Paramount+ and feature eight episodes in its first season, all penned by Sheridan himself. The exciting news comes off the recent success of the writer/director’s other Texas-based show, “Landman,” which concluded its second season in January. We previously covered some of the DFW landmarks that made a guest appearance in “Landman,” and now it looks like we’ll be able to turn that story into a series once “Frisco King” starts filming in town next month.
Production will take place in Fort Worth
Not only will Taylor Sheridan’s new show take place in Frisco, but it will actually be filmed around the Fort Worth area, similar to the “Landman” production. “Frisco King” is reportedly starting to film in April, with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram noting that the Tarrant County courthouse will likely be one of the first locations taken over by the show’s crew. As of writing, it’s unclear as to whether they’ll film in Frisco itself, or what other places along the way may be featured. Speaking about the exciting announcement, Matt Thunell, who serves as the Paramount Television Studios prexy, told Variety, “We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of Frisco King and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character. Having him pen all episodes of the season with his singular voice will be a treat for fans of Tulsa King and audiences around the world.”
Texas’s film industry has been booming
Taylor Sheridan has helped create a positive impact on Texas’s film industry. The state’s biggest studio was developed and built in north Fort Worth thanks to Sheridan and David Glasser, the CEO of 101 Studios, along with Paramount Television and Hillwood. And in 2023, a landmark $200 million incentive bill was passed in the Lone Star State to draw further interest from film/television production companies who want to shoot in Texas. Along with the monetary incentive are rules stipulating that production companies will only be granted those funds if 60% of its shoot dates happen in the state and if 55% of its workers are Texans. It’s a decision that has helped boost the local economy and bring about more job opportunities for those looking to gain film and television experience without having to go all the way to La La Land to fulfill that dream.
