The best burger joints in Pittsburgh, according to Yelp

Order a quality burger at these eight Pittsburgh burger joints, which Yelp users say are among the city’s best.

Ah, the burger — is there anything more American than it? An all-American burger is handheld convenience wrapped in white bread, with a little piece of lettuce to make yourself think you’re being healthy.

Pittsburgh is a great city for burger lovers, and not just because “burgh” is in the name. We scoured Yelp to discover the best places to grab a burger in the Steel City, from the ‘burbs to the heart of the ‘Burgh.

Curious about our methodology? We made sure that the people of Yelp liked the burger, and not just other food at the restaurant. In fact, we wanted the burger to stand out as one of the menu’s best offerings. Thus, a list of Yelp’s best burgers in Pittsburgh was born. Read on to see where you’ll be getting takeout this weekend.

1. Pittsburgh Sandwich Society – Yelp Rating: 4.4

Pittsburgh Sandwich Society has three different restaurant pages on Yelp (the restaurant has a food truck and a restaurant location at Strange Roots Experimental Ale in Millvale), so this intellectual took the average of the three ratings. The burger on offer—among other sandwiches—is the In N Aht Burger, a Pittsburgh spin on the popular West Coast burger. One Yelper said, “The in-and-aht burger is the best burger I have ever had. Is that a bold statement? Yes. Is it one that I stand by? Absolutely.” Who are we to ignore Cami from Gibsonia?!

2. Moonlit Burgers – Yelp Rating: 4.5

Moonlit Burgers, a popular, no-frills burger joint, slings incredible smash burgers at two Pittsburgh area locations, one in Dormont and one within city limits in Uptown. According to one Yelper, “the burgers are yummy, and in my opinion, the single is just the perfect burger.” Moonlit also offers a veggie burger option. “I understand the hype now!” said another Yelp reviewer.

3. Applewood Smoke Burger – Yelp Rating: 4.5

Though it’s popular on Yelp, Applewood Smoke Burger is still somewhat of a hidden gem, given that it’s found in the back of Highland Park’s Park Place Pub. “Pittsburgh’s best kept secret,” said one Yelper. “It’s so good I don’t even want to tell anyone about it so I can savor the absolutely incredible burgers for myself.” Secret’s out!

4. Nox’s Tavern and Grille – Yelp Rating: 4.6

Nox’s Tavern and Grille is a Blawnox institution, a classic dive bar with some of the best bar food around. “I would give this place an award for best burger if I could,” one person on Yelp said. Being on our list is sort of an award, right? These burgers are made in the style of Connecticut burgers, meaning that they’re steamed rather than grilled or fried. The result is a moist, juicy flavor bomb of a Pittsburgh burger.

5. Oak Hill Post – Yelp Rating: 4.8

Charming Oak Hill Post, located in the Brookline neighborhood, serves both brunch and dinner. And the restaurant’s burgers are stars of the show on both menus—breakfast burger, anyone? The burgers are made with fresh, local ingredients that work together to create what one Yelper called “the Platonic Ideal of a burger.” Note that Oak Hill Post is temporarily closed for a rebranding, but it’s likely any iteration of Oak Hill Post will serve its popular burgers.

6. Brick N’ Mortar Kitchen & Catering – Yelp Rating: 4.7

Brick N’ Mortar Kitchen & Catering has its brick-and-mortar (see what we did there?) operation in the South Hills borough of Heidelberg. Burgers make up a large portion of the menu of sandwiches and other casual American eats. While you can get a classic burger, you can also order a special take on the sandwich, like the “Godfather” burger featuring giardiniera and capicola or the “Heidelberger” which features creamy marsala mushrooms. For one Yelper, a Brick N’ Mortar burger was “everything I love in a burger, like it was created just for me.”

7. Simply Burgers & Fries – Yelp Rating: 4.8

Sometimes, a restaurant’s name need not be long or witty — it can just be short and to the point, like “Simply Burgers & Fries.” And if you’re looking for, say, a simple burger with some fries, have we got the Pittsburgh burger joint for you. The restaurant’s website itself says it will be “your favorite smash burger restaurant in Pittsburgh. At least in the top three for sure!” As Simply Burgers & Fries is located under Row House Cinema in Lawrenceville, you can pair your burger with a movie! And you have options: you can order classic smash burgers as well as a donut burger or a plant-based burger. Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean you won’t be wowed. “Lots of flavor,” said one Yelp review, adding that the “seasoning is just right.” Another said of Simply Burgers & Fries, “they do the simple things correctly.”

8. Red’s Good News – Yelp Rating: 4.8

Red’s Good News is a casual watering hole that also happens to serve great burgers. The bar, located in Brookline, makes smash burgers for the good people of the neighborhood. One Yelp reviewer called the burgers “definitely legit” and lamented that “It’s not fair to the rest of Pgh that the two best smash burgers IMO are like 5 mins apart from each other” (likely referring to Oak Hill Post). And on weekdays, the burgers are on special.
