San Diego’s East County is one of the most diverse landscapes the area has to offer. From hiking in the hills to swimming in the lakes, it’s the perfect place to indulge in summer fun. Whether the kids are out of school for the summer or you’re taking a much-earned staycation, there are so many options to soak up the sun that you should create a summer bucket list and check them off as you go.

A bucket list doesn’t need to be filled with life-changing tasks. Sometimes, it can be as simple as hiking your favorite trail during a summer evening or spending a few hours doing something you usually wouldn’t. Sometimes, we put too much pressure on ourselves to have special experiences all the time. By creating a low-stress, local list of summer activities, you’ll feel like you’re getting the most out of your summer.

Get ready to live it up under the sun in San Diego’s East County during the dog days of summer.

Lake Jennings is a reservoir located in Lakeside, and it’s the perfect spot to spend a summer day. While it’s ideal for swimming, there is more to do than just take in the lake: there are outdoor activities everyone in the family will enjoy.

Camping, boating, fishing, and hiking are all adventures you can take at Lake Jennings. The campground has hookup sites for RVs so that you can beat the summer heat, or you can take a traditional route and pitch a tent in one of the 44 tent spots. Enjoy a bonfire, make s’mores, and take in the beautiful San Diego landscape. There is also a large play structure for the kids.

According to the lake’s website, it is the best freshwater fishing spot in the county. If you want to take up the hobby, you can rent a boat if you don’t have your own. Not into fishing? No problem. You can also rent paddleboats, kayaks, motorboats, and rowboats.

From camping to boating, a visit to Lake Jennings is perfect for your summer bucket list.

Day use and shore fishing are open Monday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fishing and boating hours are 6 a.m. to midnight (with entry gates closing at 10 p.m.) Friday and Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. (entry gates close at 6 p.m.).
