West’s pioneering work in nanomedicine and cancer research has resulted in 20 patents and over 225 research publications.

Additionally, three faculty members—Scott T. Acton, Gustavo Kunde Rohde, and Shannon Barker—were inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows, representing the top 2% of medical and biological engineers nationwide.

Distinguished recognition for legal and educational excellence

A.E. Dick Howard, the longest-serving professor in UVA’s history, received the 2025 Outstanding Virginian Award from the Virginia General Assembly. The award acknowledges Howard’s contributions to constitutionalism and democracy throughout his career at the Law School.

In education research, Bob Pianta, former dean of the School of Education and Human Development, earned the American Educational Research Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award.
