The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office preliminarily classified the death as homicide.

Witness video shows Mitchell, 43, on the ground outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel, calling for help as guards pinned him down. Mitchell, who had mental health issues, was found unresponsive by police, who unsuccessfully attempted lifesaving measures.

The incident, which mirrors the 2020 killing of George Floyd, has raised concerns about the use of force and accountability. The Milwaukee district attorney’s office is investigating, with no timeline for a charging decision. Hyatt’s management company, Aimbridge Hospitality, has suspended the involved employees.
