On December 2, Giving Tuesday, Quinta Brunson announced the launch of The Quinta Brunson Field Trip Fund, a new program that will provide free school field trips for Philadelphia students. Speaking about her decision to help students from underserved communities gain access to educational experiences, the “Abbott Elementary” star talked about how important field trips were to her during her own childhood in Philadelphia.
“They opened my world, sparked my creativity, and helped me imagine a future beyond what I saw every day. Going somewhere new shows you that the world is bigger and more exciting than you believe, and it can shape what you come to see as achievable,” she said. The National Education Association similarly emphasizes the importance of field trips, stating that they lead to higher graduation rates, stronger grades, and a better income once students enter the workforce.
Brunson’s program, which she created with the help of the School District of Philadelphia, operates on donations from those who can afford to help cover the costs associated with public school field trips. Let’s dive into how it works and where the kids will be going.
How does the new program work?
The Quinta Brunson Field Trip Fund is funded primarily through donations, which can be made at the following link. The goal is to raise enough money to cover field trip costs for around 117,000 Philadelphia students enrolled in the city’s public school system. These educational experiences will take the kids to over 200 national landmarks and museums, plus an additional 100 venues, discovery centers, and parks around Philly.
Brunson, who previously received a key to the city outside her former West Philadelphia elementary school, Andrew Hamilton School, has often donated to the place where she grew up. She donated $25,000 to Groceries for Good, among several others. In a statement, the actress and comedian said, “I’m proud to support Philadelphia students with experiences that remind them their dreams are valid and their futures are bright.”
