Grandfather Arrested for Leaving Granddaughter with Homeless Woman

A grandfather was arrested after allegedly giving a homeless woman $20 to care for his seven-year-old granddaughter while he drank at a bar. The incident unfolded on Monday evening, approximately 7:45 p.m. in Sacramento, California. Responding to a 911 call from a passerby, sheriffs located a 54-year-old man, identified as Jason Warren, who claimed his grandchild was kidnapped for human trafficking.

Upon arrival, deputies found Warren highly intoxicated. Warren confessed that he had given an unknown woman $20 to take his granddaughter to a nearby thrift store while he went into a bar approximately four hours earlier. Surveillance footage from the area validated Warren’s account, showing the woman leaving with the child.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s North Patrol immediately initiated a search for the missing girl, deploying a sheriff’s helicopter, unmanned drones and a K9 unit. Approximately 30 minutes into the search, the woman returned to the parking lot with the child, having heard the announcements from the sheriff’s helicopter.

The woman confirmed that Warren had given her money to take the child to the thrift store. She took the child to her camp for food, believing that the highly intoxicated Warren could not care for the child.

Once the child was located, deputies spoke with her and found her unharmed. She was examined by Fire Department personnel as a precaution. Further investigation revealed that the child’s aunt had full custody, but had entrusted Warren with care due to her work commitments.

Warren, charged with felony child endangerment among other charges, was arrested and transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail. His bail is set at $75,000. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
