The marijuana scene in Iowa is a tricky one. You’re able to purchase products with THC in them throughout the state, but the recreational use of marijuana remains illegal despite Iowa Senate Democrats trying to decriminalize weed and allow retail sales in 2023. Iowa isn’t alone in this, either. According to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation, just under half of the nation’s states—24—have legalized recreational weed use, though many more than that allow marijuana for medicinal applications.
While this truth is unfortunate, it doesn’t mean that Iowans can’t enjoy weed from time to time. Many of the states that border Iowa have legalized recreational weed use in recent years, leading to dispensaries popping up all over. And of course, there’s no better holiday for dispensary sales than Apr. 20, colloquially called 4/20 and even Weed Day.
If you’re curious about this name, you’re not alone. According to PBS, the abridged version of the tale states that a friend group in California would meet to smoke weed at 4:20 p.m. in 1971. The tradition caught on from there, and we now have an entire day to gather in a hazy glory. Just don’t forget the snacks!
Now, let’s break down some dispensaries that are having good 4/20 deals in legal weed states that border Iowa. Just don’t travel through states where recreational weed is illegal, like Wisconsin or Nebraska, after picking up your bargain bud.

2. Sunrise Dispensary

Some weed shops go all out for 4/20, and that’s exactly what Sunrise Dispensary is doing with its “20 Days of 4/20 in St. Louis” event. Each day leading up to Apr. 20 features new deals, ranging from BOGO steals to percentage-off offers on certain items or brands. On 4/20 specifically, customers can nab the deals from the previous three days in addition to earning two new ones. Oh, and did we mention there are doorbuster deals for vapes, swells, and eighths? To get in on the action, be one of the first 20 to 25 customers to enter the building.
3. Legacy Cannabis

Legacy Cannabis has everything you need for a good high, and it’s offering a storewide sale on 4/20 to keep you connected to your higher self. Customers will get 20% off their purchases, and you can enjoy a deal if you head there early, too. The store is offering 10% off everything on Apr. 18 and 15% off on Apr. 19. This means you have three days to rake in the savings.
4. From the Earth Dispensary

From the Earth Dispensary has eight locations in Missouri, and they’re all offering 4/20 deals, which can be found on the smoke shop’s website. Some of them end early, with myriad deals slated to conclude on Apr. 16, but others last through the holiday. Some of the markdowns offered by From the Earth include discounts on drinks, gummies, gemstones, caramels, and more. All this means is that you’re set, no matter how you prefer to elevate yourself.
If that weren’t enough, From the Earth is doing a four-day giveaway. As detailed on its Instagram, 10 winners will be chosen, and thousands of dollars in cash and product will be given out. Cha-ching!
5. Waabigwan Mashkiki

The chain has two additional storefronts outside of Mahnomen in Morehead and St. Cloud, and the three locations are offering prime 4/20 deals. And as luck would have it, the chain is offering up to 45% off many of its products to celebrate 4/20. 7. Cookies Dispensary St. Louis

The deals at Cookies Dispensary St. Louis may just be too sweet to pass up. On 4/20, customers will enjoy markdowns, BOGO deals, and more on weed, vapes, and edibles. For example, Wyld Gummies will be on a buy-one-get-one-free deal, and 3.5 g. of Camp will be two for $42. There will also be giveaways, including a chance to win a “free ounce every month for a year.” Who could beat that?
8. Bud & Rita’s Cannabis Dispensary
