Discover 12 things to do in Southern New Mexico this October, from sipping local wine and picking pumpkins to dancing with zombies.

If you’re tired of the same old weekend routine, Southern New Mexico offers plenty of opportunities to shake things up this October. You can set your worries on fire (literally, at Burning of the Bull), learn the “Thriller” dance alongside a crowd of zombies, or listen to ghost stories around a campfire in a former prison yard.

Prefer something a little less spooky? This month’s events calendar also includes a pumpkin festival with an adults-only trike race and pie-eating contest, a wine festival, and a five-day jazz festival.

Whatever kind of fun you’re after, here are the top 12 things to do in Southern New Mexico this October.

1. Mesilla Valley Maze

For tons of fall fun all in one spot, head to Mesilla Valley Maze. Spread across about 30 acres, you’ll find a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin junction (where you can shop for pumpkins), games, and other attractions for kids.

Mesilla Valley Maze is open for most of the month, but you may want to plan your visit around its New Mexico Pumpkin Festival (Oct. 24-25). The festival will feature live music, the Tour de Maze (an adults-only trike race), and a pumpkin pie eating contest.

Location: 3855 W. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces

Cost: Adult tickets cost $19.

2. Ghost Stories by the Campfire

The evening starts in the courtroom, where you’ll watch a short video and enjoy complimentary wine, hot chocolate, and hors d’oeuvres. Then, guides take you into the old jail to tour the spooky jail cells. After that, you’ll make your way to the prison yard, decorated as a graveyard, and gather around the campfire to hear the scary stories.
